4 YR ANNIVERSARY!
Until I got the "birthday card" from Obesity help, the date completely slipped my mind. Yesterday was four years since my gastric bypass! WOW!!!!! I cannot tell the difference in my life...well of course I can and will!
Weight: before gastric bypass 257 lbs the day before surgery in 2007. TODAY: I fluctuate between 110 lbs and 118 lbs depending on salt intake and fluid retention.
Size: before bypass I was 26 on top, 28 on bottom. Today I wear a size 4 or 6 depending on the style. Shoe size before bypass was 8 WIDE--today I can fit into some 7's but usually 7.5 normal width. Before bypass, swimsuits with "skirt" to try and hide my big butt--today I wear bikini's even though my legs still have excess skin....I don't care!
Health: before gastric bypass I had diabetes, sleep apnea, severe asthma, severe arthritis, a heart murmur, they wanted to replace both knees, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and I was on 12 daily prescription medicines. TODAY: diabetes is CURED, sleep apnea is CURED, severe asthma is CURED (have not used an inhaler in 3-1/2 years), knees have re-aligned themselves without surgery, blood pressure is 123/70, no high cholesterol, arthritis significantly reduced, heart murmur still there but in NO danger of heart attack per my cardiologist--just a little mitral prolapse due to age. ONLY MEDICATION I TAKE IS Tylenol for arthritis and antacids when my stomach is upset.
In TWO weeks I will go sky-diving to celebrate turning 60. Before my bypass the doctor told me I would die before I could retire even though I planned to retire at 62!
This surgery SAVED MY LIFE. If you are still on the fence about weight loss surgery and you have comorbidity factors, stop waiting. You are costing yourself days, weeks, months, and years of pure joy! I wish I had done it ten years earlier!
I have had a lower body lift and brachioplasty to get rid of excess skin. I still plan to have upper legs done as well when funding permits. I

donna: congratulations on your continued success! 4 years that is wonderful! I totally agree with you in that WLS saved me too. I weigh a bit less than you did BEFORE you had your surgery, however, I have lost 200# on top of what I weigh now which is still too much by weight scale standards.
I hope to lose more but take it as it comes. If I don't while I am still heavy/obese, I am much healthier than I was before and can do so much more and my quality of life is much better.
My doctor also told me I would die before I had the surgery. It's scary when you hear that news.
WLS is indeed a lifeline and wonderful tool. I don't regret having it done, now I just hope I can maintain what I have lost and am finding that a *****allenging as my appetite seems to have come back, foods taste good again, and all those bad carbs keep calling out to me!!
So happy you are able to live your life and enjoy it. Thanks for letting us all know and it helps me (at least) to realize all that I do have I want to keep and if I lose any more well then that will be a bonus for me. Take care Mary
