What did your preo-op diet consist of?
I am 28 days away from my surgery.....
(happy dance). I was not instructed to be on any pre-op diet other than the day before surgery (clear liquids and milk of mag.) I would however like to put myself on a pre-op diet. Therefore my question is what was your pre-op diet and how soon before your surgery did you start it?

Therefore my question is what was your pre-op diet and how soon before your surgery did you start it? 2 weeks of Optifast diet. Liquids and a Optifast protein bar 2 x day. lost 15 lbs before RNY on 2/24/11. before that I did 2 weeks of nutrisystem on my own. Neither one was bad at all. I was really excited before my surgery and amazed at how good I felt after surgery it hasn't been a bad experience at all. I was afraid of the pain because I already have Fibromyalgia, arthritis, and can hardly walk. But everything is better since surgery I still get around slowly but feel great! I wish you success and good health in your upcoming surgery. Please keep in touch, and take care. Debbie
I was given the option of a liquid diet or a 1000 cal/day solid foods diet. I chose the solid foods because I was going to need to learn to eat correctly anyway. My Nut gave me guidance and I went from there. I was highly advised to limit my carbs to veggies and fruits and no more than 2 1/2 cup servings of veggies and 1 half cup of fresh fruit a day. I had either Greek yogurt with fruit or 1 cup of 2% cottage cheese with the fruit in it in the morning for breakfast. Lunches were generally some kind of home made soup or cafe steamers. Dinner was lean protein and a vegitable. Sometimes I'd add in a few almonds for an after work snack. Generally, the cals went like this: Breakfast -200- 250 , lunch - 350, dinner 400, snack 50 - 100. I highly recommend that you completely cut out all white carbs now or really limit them and go through the withdrawal from them now rather than after surgery. This worked for me. I did it for 4 weeks pre-op and lost 18 pounds in that time.
Good luck in what ever you choose to do. You're getting closer to a whole new life. Congratulations.

I was on a low-carb, high protein diet in the month before my surgery in order to shrink my liver.
We have fat around our liver. It makes it difficult for the surgeon to see and work in there. They must use retractors to move it.
Livers are a slippery organ to begin with. And they can bleed.
Anything you can do to help reduce the fat around it is to your benefit.
I also used the month before my surgery to go cold-turkey on the things I knew would have to go anyway...namely Diet Coke for me.

My pre-op 'diet' was---everything in sight, LOL! Notexactly what I'd advise, but I sure did enjoy it.
Honestly, the best thing you can do is a high-protein, low-carb, sensible-calorie diet. Packing in the protein will help with post-op healing, and low-carbing will reduce the glycogen stores in your liver, making it less 'slippery'. Losing weight right now is NOT your goal---getting in the best possible health IS. Start your vitamins now, and if you haven't already, has a set of labs done---if you're low in anything, now's the best time to get your levels up to snuff.
And---don't make yourself feel deprived. You'll get enough of that immediately after surgery. (*grin*)

I just started my pre op diet on Tuesday.
On Monday, I ate everything I knew I would no longer be able to enjoy (Namely Bacon, Chocolate and Steak)
Tuesday, I started on the "liquid" diet. The office that I go through sells Fusion protein powder, for shakes, and beforehand, I stocked up on several tubs in various flavors. I am supposed to have 4-6 shakes per day, however I find I can get by with 2-3 and not feel hungry or deprived.
I also am becoming best friends with sugar free instant pudding, and sugar free popsiciles.
I'm slowly working in chicken broth (i think it has zero flavor honestly) and drinking tons of water and crystal light.
I do notice that I'm slightly crabbier now, especially when my spouse and friends order out or go out for food. (Last night they all ordered Chinese, yum! but I was good and had some egg drop soup)
I'm hoping that my boyfriend will commit to eating healthier with me, and maybe knock off some of his pudge!
Anywho, my liquid pre op diet is just getting me on track for the post op festivities. 11 days to go!
