Speaking of the blame game

I think you are really UNINFORMED about how the DS works.  If she had spent 1/2 the energy on working a DS as she has spent on diet/exercise and therapy she would have lost a lot more weight than she has lost and she wouldn't be gaining 50 lbs in a month.

I think her weight loss history (going from over 700 to 350) with NO help from malabsorption or metabolism is enough evidence to show that she would have been hugely successful with the DS.

I'm not saying she doesn't need therapy.  I'm saying that therapy diet and exercise is not enough for anyone who needs to loose FIVE HUNDRED pounds.

It doesn't make any sense medically either.  The longer she carries around so much excess weight the more damage she is doing to her body that is irreversable.  If a surgery would get her to or near a normal BMI in MUCH less time, that seems to be the only medically appropriate plan.

She isn't going to 12 step her metabolism back to normal.  Ever.

I'm all for her having surgical intervention but she has to face her past and recover from that before anything will work for her. If she was molested as has been strongly hinted at she would still have a problem with weight loss even with any surgery. Since we are able to eat around any surgery I'm sure she would still struggle until she makes peace with her past, hence the need for a 12 step program or some type of therapy. I do wish her well tho cause she seems like a sweet gal.
Really? I didn't realize there was some magic involved that stopped WLS from working if you'd been molested but didn't go through a 12 step program or other therapy.

And if there was, it must not have worked on me.

just my slanted thoughts on it~~and I like Ruby...
it is better reality TV if there is lots of DRAMA! If Ruby gets WLS, therapy, does well...no more show!

What about recovering from surgery, not being able to get in her water and protein and then getting the foamies? Not to mention dealing with people who think she took the "easy way out" and a host of other WLS-related drama.

I think there is plenty of drama in WLS.

I agree.  It is all about $$$$$$.  And no amount of $$$ is worth her health.  So sad.

the problem I have with her is if she is not willing to comply with a non surgical plan why would she comply with a surgical one. She has serious issues outside of weight. the truth be told she seems to be one who would suffer from transfer addiction.

I think there are many of use here on OH who probably were unable or "unwilling" to comply with a non-surgical plan for a long period of time but are doing very well after WLS.

As much as Ruby annoys me at times I think the fact that she lost so much weight on a non-surgical plan speaks volumes for how well she would do with a WLS.

I can't tell you how many times I lost 40, 50, 100 lbs before I had surgery only to stall, stop losing, start gaining and then gain everything back + another 30, 40 lbs each time.  I dieted my way up to my high weight and at that point intervention is needed to help a screwed up metabolism.

If losing weight when your MO or SMO is so easy I would have NEVER had weight loss surgery.  In fact, I fought it for about 5 years saying "no...I can do this"  Until I realized my metabolism was so screwed up after being obese since I was a kid and losing and gaining weight over and over again.

I don't get this....you could look at ANY fat person and say the same thing.

As for Ruby: as I tell my brother all the time, WHY does she think doing the SAME things, which have NEVER worked in the past, is going to have a different outcome this time? She seems like a delighful woman and I wish her all the best...

How can you say that a person who has lost 350 lbs is non-compliant?  That is completely ridiculous and is BLAMING HER for her screwed up metabolism.  And it is that BLAME that this thread is all about.

Why didn't YOU lose all your weight by diet and exercise?  You were NONCOMPLIANT and therefore should have never been allowed surgery (Say you and the other blamers.)

How many people do you know who have been able to lose over 300 lbs by  diet and exercise?

In Season 1, Ruby was offered WLS as an option. She refused because her skin would be saggy and she'd look gaunt sometimes. She was very upset in one episode after losing 100 pounds to find she had very saggy skin.

I think she would have been very successful with WLS, especially since she is getting therapy.
