Peek Into a Day of WLS Blogger Eats

Today, myself and some other WLS bloggers are blogging our food intake so you can see a bizarre range of longer term post-op eating styles. Let's get it started!

Throughout the day, be sure to check out my other blogger friends posts too -

  • Nik from Bariatric Foodie
  • So, here it goes!  I was askeered to do this post, as I am Not A Dieter.

And, much of our WLS Community is constantly dieting and restricting.  I don't "do" diets.  I am horrified on a daily basis by many very-long-term post op weight loss patients promoting Very Low Calorie Diets that would kill a squirrel.  But, I don't discuss it much, because, I am also, Not Really Even A Good Example Myself.

Picture 44I don't even COUNT CALORIES.  (For Shame!)  Go on, beat me with a wet noodle, I might eat half of it.  Mmm, tasty carbs.

I estimate, generously, that I am currently eating an average of 1500 calories daily at 7 years and 1 month post op roux en y gastric bypass surgery.

I NEVER, EVER thought that I would EVER eat "normally" after weight loss surgery.  If you had asked me pre-operatively or at 1 week, 6 weeks, or even 1-2 years post surgery, there's no way that I would have known that eating food would become pretty normal again at some point.    I ate about 0-300 calories for weeks on end, and then under 1000 for most of a year.  Starvation, works.  I lost nearly all of my excess weight.

Now, no. I refuse to starve myself.

That said, I still have guidelines that keep me in check.  Sugar = omgdeath.  I can't push my limits, which means certain foods do not actually enter my body, because I prefer not being sick or in a near hypoglycemic coma from eating them.  OMG!  But, you are the BAD GIRL?  No.  Not really.  Again, we have to reiterate this?  I don't eat that badly.

I DO EAT SUGAR and CARBS, yes, I freely admit this, but I do not eat a full serving of say... dairy ice cream, because IT WILL KILL ME.  I also avoid many other food types and combinations, because, after 7 years, YOU LEARN WHAT HURTS YOU!  I'd rather not feel bad.

I assume that I have some days that go OVER that, perhaps a day with a dinner out because I tend to choose bread + oil, plus cheese, cheese and cheese or meat, if I don't get a salad covered in CHEESE.   For instance, a dinner out, I choose, a piece of bread dipped in olive oil, a few bites baby green salad with hunks of parmigiana on it, and some really good steak.  That kind of meal ADDS up.  But, it's worth it.

I like calories.  I always have.

But, once I realized, that's sort of why we are doing this, to show the DIFFERENCES in various post op eating, I was okay with it, and this should become a repeat event.  To show the more realistic input of long term post ops.

Today - live blogging my intake -

    • Out of bed @ 6:30am -  coffee, unsweetened soy milk, unsweetened cocoa powder, Splenda, I repeat this drink all day long.
    • Vitamins - quite by accident - I grabbed my stash during a seizure, today is going to be a great brain day, if I've twitched already by 7:30am. #mybrainiswinning
    • Breakfast - None as of 10:00am.  I rarely eat before 11:00am.  (Nik, I warned you this would be wicked exciting!)
    • Check back to my blog later for updates...

Well, I'm 2 years post op and I'm an eater too!  My name is Kim, and I eat....EVERY DAY, and I eat CARBS and SUGAR ****asionally).

I DO NOT DIET.  I consume between 1,500 and 1,800 calories per day.  I still log my food M-F.  I would estimate that 80% of the time I make very good food choices.  But, if the M&M bag passes by my office, I will eat a few.  I don't eat sugar every day, and I don't consume junk carbs daily either.  I still follow the rules of no drinking with meals or for 30 mins after, protein first, no carbonated beverages (I've tried....just can't handle them....I was a Tab junkie pre-surgery).

However, I do workout 5 times a week so I think that allows me to get away with my sins....I've been maintaining my weight for a full year now.

Here's my typical day (I eat often during the day)
B1-1/2 cup cottage chs with NSA peaches, 1/2 of a ww English muffin with butter
B2-3 oz baked chicken
S-slim jim
S-2 pretzel rods
L-Lean Cuisine
S-Chobani Greek yogurt (strawberry banana)
S-banana
D-baked meat and veggies

Dessert-usually a NSA ice cream bar or s/f jello with pineapple and cool whip

I vowed when I started this journey that I'd never diet again....I was very strict the first year, and now I eat what I want in moderation.  If I overindulge, I up the cardio.  So far, so good!

Thank you all for blogging about your food intake and how eating styles and caloric intake can vary. I take a lot of flack for my eating style and my caloric intake. In my office there are 3 other women who have had gastric bypass surgery and based on the what I eat they have accused me of being either bulimic or anorexic because no WLS patient could eat the way I do and still maintain their weight. I don't diet. I eat whatever I want in moderation.
I consume an average of 2500 calories a day. A typical day of food for me looks like this:

Starting at 6:00 am
Protein Coffee
Scrambled egg with cheese
Slice of multigrain toast with peanut butter
Protein shake
fage greek yogurt with fresh pineapple
edamame
roast chicken
gouda cheese
olives
green salad
2 pieces of dark chocolate
peanut butter and banana sandwich
steak
sweet potato
no sugar added ice cream or some other low sugar dessert
oatmeal or toast before bed at midnight.

I don't drive so I walk everywhere and ride the bus. Three times a week I go to either dance class or yoga and on the alternate days I lift weights.

Thank you for sharing a day of your eats. I don't feel like such a freak now when I see that it can vary a lot and I just happen to work with people who NEVER eat more than 1200-1500 calories a day.

I have a diet neener neener

Just like everyone who eats.

But I do NOT diet, and I do NOT deprive myself. I never avoid anything just because of calories. I do avoid stuff that makes me dump, milk, and pure water. Now that I have RH I'm LEARNING what to avoid to keep me feeling good. Not because of calories, because I don't like becoming drenched in sweat an feeling like I'm gonna die.

I am a boring person though.... I eat pretty boring stuff. One day recently:

1. Berries and greek yoghurt with a spoon of flax
2. protein shake
3. snack bar (Kudos, 100 calories, yeah, it's candy)
4. protein shake
5. snack bar
6. Turkey salad
7. protein shake
8. quiche
9. minute muffin with flax meal and berries and cream cheese

I gotta say I LIKE the protein shakes, and I drink them for my liquids. LATELY I've been eating an approximate average of 1500 calories a day. For a long time I was getting only 700 - 1000 because food didn't interest me that much. Doesn't still, but I found and fell in love with the Fage-n-berries, YUM, and a few other things. This morning..... I was exactly at goal.
