RNY was 9 weeks ago. I'm loosing 2/2.5 pounds per week. My calories are around 600-800. I get in 60 grams of protein each day and 60 oz of liquids along with my vitamins. That part i understand. What i don't understand is carbohydrates. The only white carb i've eaten is mashed potatoes and they make me sleepy and slow afterwards so i know to stay away. But i LOVE vegetables and those are carbs..but "good" carbs? also, i purchased carb control wheat wraps with 18 grams of carbs and 7 net carbs...i would MAYBE be able to eat half of one with some turkey, lettuce, tomato etc...should i try it now or just keep staying away from all carbs minus vegetables and fruit and the occasional veggie pattie... im so scared of doing something wrong and not loosing weight. my dietician tells me this is not an exact science and as long as i follow the rules and choose healthy foods and the weight comes off im good to go..but i still find it easier to just not eat than find things to put in my mouth...

ahhh thanks in advance...Nicole

Nicole,

I am almost 7 weeks out from a different surgery from you, buth have all the same feelings.  I am getting in around 800 calories a day with about 85 grams of protein but I am also working out so I don't think I could exist on 600.   Anyhow, for me it's common sense.  Protein first, vegetables next and then carbs.  I haven't gotten to the other carbs yet and frankly since they gave me such a problem prior to surgery I am choosing to just stay away from them.

I think that after I lose my weight I am going to venture into a bigger variety of foods, which may or may not include things like wraps or even whole grain carb like items.  I know that there are those that will disagree and say that we need carbs and a balance is important and I do not agree with that.  But right now since I can only get 3-4 ounces of protein in at a meal, I am doing what works for me!

Good luck!

You might not tolerate many veggies yet, so it would be a trial and error thing. You need PROTEIN first and foremost and then complex carbs (which would be most veggies, but not stuff like peas, cooked carrots, potatoes and other starch veggies) and some healthy fats.

If I were in your shoes I would avoid grain foods, whi*****ludes breads, cereals, rice, pasta etc. in the rapid weight loss phase. Basically animal source protein and veggies and some dairy if you tolerate it. And LOTS AND LOTS of water, and of course a good solid supplement regimen.

I would say protein always first, I would also say you stay away from carbs as long as possible.

Good carbs are those that don't spike your blood sugar quickly - causing a release of insulin. Bad carbs are those that are quickly converted to glucose in your body and do trigger insulin. A white potato will be more quickly converted to glucose than a sweet potato even though the sweet potato has more natural sugar in it...why? Because the sweet potato contains more fiber and that slows down the body's processing. Sooooo....you need to learn glycemic ratings/glycemic index so you can always make good food choices. I avoided carbs other than veges and low glycemic fruits until I was below goal and 3 years out. I wish I had never reintroduced them. Avoid them and concentrate on protein and nutrient dense veges and fruit. Susan

I'm with Susan on this. Simple carbs did not pass my lips for over a year, and I barely touch them now. I do eat beans, brown rice and iris oatmeal, but that's about it. Maybe once or twice a week I'll eat bread. Those low carb breads are still breads, and I think the more important change is learning to eat meals without them. Use this opportunity to develop new skills. I eat wonderful foods, and don't miss those carbs.
