In the 70's people would have their jaws wired shut and only have enough room left to get a straw into their mouth. They carried a wire cutters on a chain around their neck. If they needed to vomit they had to cut the wires open or risk choking to death.marycatherine, I remember the wired jaws.

I'm not surprised at anything that people would try to lose weight. Over the years, I've done some nutty stuff myself out of desperation.

When I was in Jr. high ( a long time ago but not as long ago as Sue )
They advertised this vacuum suction suit for weight loss. It sounded like finally someone had found the solution to my problems.
Nope.
I remember my friend and I would buy this weight loss lotion and wrap ourselves in saran wrap and wait for the lbs to melt away.......
Still waiting.

I remember seeing those in old movies.

Um yeah. I remember this the summer between 8th and 9th grade. It was the 'MIRACLE" that was going to make me FINALLY as slim as my friends! I really believed it would work....fast forward 25 years and I had WLS.....I can't believe some of the stupid crap I tried over the years, the money I spent and the self hatred for my supposed "lack of will power".
I am so over dieting!! NEVER AGAIN.
