My little sister and I both had the surgery. She got thin and looked great ! started going out with her co-workers and drank like a fish. 2007 she was diagnosed with severe liver failure. I watched her suffer tremendously two years. My sister Passed away August 31,2009 at the age of 40. She left two beautiful children that is so hurt from losing there mother.

My sister weighed 160 pound before she got sick. She weighed 80 pounds at the time of her death. I urge all of you not to take one single drink! You can go out and have fun without the alcohol. I have not had a drink since my surgery. .AOLWebSuite .AOLPicturesFullSizeLink { height: 1px; width: 1px; overflow: hidden; } .AOLWebSuite a {color:blue; text-decoration: underline; cursor: pointer} .AOLWebSuite a.hsSig {cursor: default}

Funny u should ask this question, I am over 2.5 years out and haven't touched alcohol till last night. I had stopped due to being pregnant, breastfeeding, then my upcoming RNY, plus I was never a big drinker anyway. I was a touch worried so I had maybe 6-8 ounces of wine stretched over a 3 hour time period. The first sip, I could feel hit me hard and fast so I put it down for awhile. Try something at home first, I suppose if you really want to drink socially. Take it slow & don't ever allow yourself to forget about transfer addictions.

Hello Solise,

I was not really a drinker either and waited until about 3 years out to have a few glasses of wine.  That turned into a disaster for me.  Within 6 months I was drinking on a daily basis.  I would recommend you do research on transference addiction.  There is a strong correlation between   wls and alcoholism.  I have now not drank for 8 months and my life is better than ever.  I REGRET THAT FIRST DRINK.  I was educated from my surgeon etc not to drink as it is mostly emptyy calories and a waste but more importantly our body composition is different now and the rate of absorption is very fast.  I knew the risks and still did it anyway thinking I was exempt...BIG MISTAKE.
So Blessed!

Everybody thinks, "That could never happen to me."

I waited about 9 months and honestly I wish I would have never had one drink. Just last night I went out for my birthday and had a drink or a few. Today I decided that today is Day 1 of not drinking again, I know this sounds sad because it's not that I like to drink but just scares me because when I do drink it hits me fast and hard and I worry that if I keep doing that I make bad decisions and am only embrassing myself in the long run. So here's to me Day 1 of making a new start to not drink.
