Sleeve vs. Plication? OCC clinic?
Hi Donna,
If I were to choose between the 2, I'd go with the sleeve over a procedure that's so new. Although I'm going with the DS because it's proven to be the most effective for losing the weight and keeping the most off. I didn't want to mess around with a surgery that might not work.
I had never heard of plication, so I googled it. I found this 3 year study done.
Here's the link to the study done: obesitycontrolcenter.com/gastric-plication/3-year-gastric-pl ication-report/
The article does said "LGCP seems to be feasible, safe, and effective as a promising bariatric procedure based on this initial study."
"Along with no major complications to report in the present series, satisfactory excessive weight loss was achieved 61 percent of the time at 24 months by most patients, with all achieving at least a 10-percent loss of initial weight." SO, they are saying 39% of the people didn't have successful weight loss!! That doesn't sound like very good results to me. But then again, I don't really know what the statistics are for the sleeve, so it could be similar? My sister had the sleeve done about 18 months ago and she's doing great, she lost almost all her excess weight. I think she's 5'6" and down to about 150.
I would not be comfortable going with a surgery that has not long term data, but maybe you are more of a risk taker.
Here's an article that I found from a place in Ohio that does it; weightloss.clevelandclinic.org/gastricplication.aspx, they say it's still investigational and that insurance doesn't cover it. They are doing a research study on their patients. Sorry, I would not be willing to be a lab rat for my weight loss surgery.
Good luck in your decision, I hope you are successful which ever one you choose.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the feedback.
I did some looking up of the proceedure. I don't recall where I found the 5 year stat but I found other information, more like a history of how it started and where it is right now in scheme of things.
It's way to new for me to try.
I found information on http://www.wlshelp.com/news/asmbs-issues-policy-statement-on -gastric-plication/
and

None of it impressed me much.
I have decided to go with the more proven sleeve proceedure.
Thanks much!

I will say this I had the plication clinical trial and Cleveland Clinic in Dec 2008.... I followed all the rules and by my six month check a couple sutures had popped. and my appetite started returning and I stopped losing at 60 lbs lost... and than I started gaining. And now several years later I have gained my 60lbs back... and am now looking to get gastric bypass.
I would go for the sleeve... it had longer results. No chance of things popping and your stomach getting bigger again.
The plication they say is great for people who don't have large amounts of weight to lose, I want to lose 130 lbs, guess it wasn't for me.

Meet the Surgeon Aug 1, 2011 .... hopefully the surgeons office is right and everything will go fast and I'll have surgery later this month.
