So the red cross was doing blood donations at school today. I donated a pint of blood. They said my iron level was amazing and I've been drinking tons of water bottles. I feel okay but was wondering if I put myself in a bad position? I'm 4 months out from rny. Thank for the advice...nicole

Hi Nicole!
I donated pretty early out and I was great! I think you will be fine...keep drinking and eat well, you should be great! It always makes me feel good to give blood. I have not been able to give for a year because I was in Honduras last year on a cruise. Iron levels are what they look for. I have seen some people say they can never donate again because of weight loss surgery but my doctors approved it.         Connie

At only 4 months post-op, your body still has a good store of iron from before surgery.  We WLSers really should not be donating blood, because we can get into iron deficient anemia pretty easily.

My iron and iron storage were perfect before RNy and even a year from it. Now - 3 years later I just had a series of iron infusions.  Not fun. What was worse is that I was tired and really struggle for last 1.5 year when i was trying to take anything and everything to make my iron to go up.  That did not work.
A lot of us see really low iron and other mineral levels down the road - 2-3 years post op. And it may be very difficult to get it go up again. And very expensive.
Donating blood is there for not recommended post op RNY.

The other reason for that is possibly future surgeries - due to complications or even PS.   We have higher chance we may need abdominal surgery down the road (I had 5 all together) and in each surgery - we lose blood.  That's one of the reason my iron storage got to so low.  And since now I can't absorb and assimilate any by mouth... - I needed infusions.

What done is done - just try not to do that again.
