Well I can't atest to cheap but if you want high quality protein powder reasonably priced with GREAT taste, ANYTHING Optimum Nutrition makes is well worth it.

Take a look at the Designer Whey brand. Otherwise that Walmart brand is about as cheap as it comes. It's a little better at Sams Club, BJs and Costco.

Depending on what surgery you have, it's perfectly reasonable to expect to get your protein from food. I'm nearly five years out and only recently added one protein supplement per day to support significantly increased muscle building exercise. Otherwise I eat real food and enjoy it--meat, fish, fowl, cheese, other dairy, eggs. I love my DS :-).

The six star brand at Walmart, and the bags at Costco are about the best deals around (particularly the Costco ones) that have good protein levels and low carbs, and rates well at consumer reports for low toxic metals.

Thing is, you don't HAVE to use shakes at all, if you make sure you get your protein via food. It's not negotiable though, you have to get it one way or the other.
