I got medical insurance after WLS!

I'm kind of in shock. Now, they want me to pay 25% more than the standard premium, but that's because I have an overactive bladder, not because of the surgery. (My son is in the same boat because he is being treated for depression.)

I'll probably stay on COBRA because they want 350%  more for my daughter because a doctor told us we should have her tonsils and adnoids taken out. But, being approved means I could switch to private insurance if I had to and that's relief to know.

I figured I'd have to be 5 years out from surgery before I wouldn't be denied but the application forms only ask about stuff in the past two years. I actually didn't even have to mention the surgery except I wasn't sure if the check-ups I was having every 6 months with my bariatric surgeon made it something I had to report so I figured better safe than sorry and put it on the form. (Next time, now that I talked with them about it, I won't.)

This was with Anthem Blue Cross in California, btw.

Congrats!  After my LB I was declined insurance after being layed off from a job... But I kept looking and found one that I did qualify for unfortunately it was also 25% higher but it was because of the surgery. I was just happy to get coverage though :)

Within months though I found an amazing job with awesome benefits and was able to obtain coverage through work that covers WLS and covered revision.

Congrats!

This was the first one I looked at too. Well, I looked at others but did not apply because they had higher premiums.

I was thinking when I applied "well, I didn't have RnY or DS so long term risks of malnourishment are much less so maybe I'll be okay" but the way they set up the app, anyone 2 years out or more who had no complications wouldn't even have to mention the surgery at all. (I think with lap band, you'd have to be two years out from any fills/unfills though because of the questions they ask.)

That's why I posted this. Because I wanted other people to know that as soon as 2 years out you can find medical insurance. The last time someone posted about medical insurance here, they were told they had to be 5 years out.

This may be because I live in CA but, even if that's true, it's still good news for some folks.
