Loretta......I will be 6 yrs, post op RNY next month.   I have had NO issues at all.   I get a bone density test yearly and my bones are STILL strong  ( both my parents had osteoporisis ).    If you take your vitamins like you are told and do everything that your surgeon tells you then you will be fine.   That being said......you could get osteoporisis evern without WLS.   I runs in my family but I take Calcium CItrite that is formulated for WLS patients ( all my other vitamins I take are OTC ).    These fears may be some that you might want to discuss with the surgeon that you are going to use.   I do know that this surgery saved my life and many many others.     Do you research on all the surgeries.   Good luck on your journey.

Hugs andn blessings ~~~ Vivian

Hi--the best thing you can do is to read all the posts here and all the various forums on this
site.  There's a lot of good info about all phases of the journey.

Supplements are very important, but if you watch your blood test results yearly, you can stay
on top of the levels and (hopefully) avoid any problems.

So read, read, read!!!

I was diagnosed with osteopenia before surgery and get a bone density test as well as a Reclast infusion every year. In addition I am religious about taking my calcium and other supplements. So far so good.

My other health issues- GERD, high cholesterol, and sleep apnea are gone since surgery.

I'm doing everything I can to avoid long term complications, including diet and lots of exercise.

I think you have to weigh and balance all the costs and benefits of WLS surgery, and make the choice to do what's right for you, not someone else.

I think it depends partly on the type of WLS.  I know with RNY, bone loss can occur if you are not diligent about taking your calcium and if you do not take the correct form of calcium.  We must have calcium citrate but some people take calcium carbonate instead (like in Viactiv or Caltrate).  Also, if your vitamin D level is too low, you won't absorb calcium correctly no matter how much you take.  There is really no way to know why the neighbor broke her ribs.  It's not something that routinely happens after WLS.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

I am going to step out on a limb - because I am one.  People who have WLS that don't address the issues that caused them to overeat can become alcoholics.  I know.  The bone breakage may be the result of over-indulging in alcohol and not merely because of the WLS.  Sure - we don't absorb like others but drinking doesn't help anything at all.  Just saying.........

Surgeon's have a protocol to follow. This includes a minimum of supplements daily and other daily needs.  There are rules for these protocols. Failure to follow these protocols is a real issue for some post ops.  Too many people think surgery alone will remove current health or wt issues alone. It takes beavior modification AND these other supplements to succeed. I'd suggest this person get a bone scan done NOW.  Deficient D levels will affect many things. LIKE calcium absoprtion to help with bone health, if she is even taking calcium citrate.  Talking to ther post ops at support groups may have some impact, if your friend can get this person to understan this may be helpful.  Failure to follow protols will lead to more health issues, and this is a very high potential for the causitive factor of the bone issue.  I'm 65, and have one broken bone my whole life, one little toe.  And I worked daily in the construction industry for 25 years.  You can utilize your fears to follow instructions about taking care of yourself.  If you don't then it's almost guaranteed you will have health issues.  If you do, then you'll probably do very well health-wise.
