I have been soooo tired...

I've been soooo tired, having headaches all of the time, feeling achy as though I had the flu, my hands and feet hurt, and my legs feel like they always wont to be on the move, to say that I'm fatigued is the understatement of the decade and I'm having much more problems with depression...  and now I know why. I went to my PCP with my laundry list of complaints and he ran very comprehensive labs. The long and the short of it is that my iron levels are off:

Serum Ferritin is low at 5,
% Saturation is low normal at 16,
Iron Binding Capacity is slightly high at 473
TIBC is okay at 78

I'm being scheduled for an iron infusion with my Hematologist that followed me for my Hemachromatosis. When I first broached having RNY we discussed that this was a possibilitly. I am hoping that an infusion will help me feel a little more like me again.

You will fee much better after the infusions.  I too ended up with low levels in June and had a round of Venifor IV pushes in early July.  Within a few days I could tell a significant difference.

Best wishes, Barbara!

Dana,

Thanks for letting me know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I have an appointment with my Bariatric Surgeon tomorrow and an appointment with my Hematologist in a couple of weeks. I'm hoping it all falls into place soon.

Thanks again,

I'm curious, were you taking a materna multi vitamin at the time.

I've always had low iron and have been taking supplements since surgery plus a materna. I'm just wondering if this could still happen.

Thanks
Hope you are feeling better soon

Hi J

Thanks for the good wishes. I do not take Materna, but do take a multivitamin. Apparently, according to my Hematologist, this can happen even if we do take our supplements. It doesn't happen to all patients by any stretch of the imagination, but does happen to some of us.

Thanks again,

Hi Wendy,

I'm also post menopausal and I take my supplements, but still find myself low. If you haven't had a panel run lately, I'd see about asking for a full CBC with a complete iron panel to see if you are low.

I hope that your fatigue improves soon.

How do you keep your iron levels up?
Wrinkled was not one of the things I wanted to be when I got older.
