Greetings to all:

1- Has anyone had to have their gallbladder or appendix removed after WLS ?

2- What were some of the symptoms that you felt, if any ?

3- Did your condition improve after having your gallbladder or appendix removed ?

I had my gall bladder removed at 10 months out.  I had constant nausea and an ultrasound showed I had gall stones.  Yeah, the nausea was gone immediately after surgery.

Hi: Ought not an ultrasound of the gallbladder be done before going into surgery ?

I don't know.  Some docs do that routinely, I think, but not all.  Mine didn't.  But many people develop gall stones after surgery.  The rapid weight loss causes an imbalance in the ratio of cholestoral to bile salts which causes stones.  There is a medication called Actigall that often prevents stones during the first year post op, though.  My doc did not recommend it and I'd never heard of it at the time or I would have asked for a prescription for it.

Thank you for your reply and for the info on the medication, I'll have to look into it. Have you heard about a medication called ursodiol also used to prevent stones ? Some where in my travels I read something about this medication, can't remember what it was, oh well.

It's the same thing.  I think actigal is just the brand name.

My surgeon removed both of those at the time of my DS. His reasoning was that should I develop abdominal pain, that's two things that would automatically be ruled out if they were already gone. Since rapid weight loss often causes gall bladder issues, he also wanted to spare me the risk of a second surgery to remove it.

I've not missed either of them, at all. (*grin*)

I had my gallbladder removed just before WLS. Piece of cake in terms of recovery, and I don't miss it at all. And I felt so much better without the frequent gall bladder attacks.
