I've never been a fan of Paula Deen. I'm sure her food tastes great, but I've always been a bit repulsed by her. Just my opinion...

I'm sure her food tastes gross. At least that's what people who have tried her recipes say. That there is maybe 3 good ones out of all of them but most are disgusting.

Well what do you expect from someone who think it's a good idea to make Naan bread out of pre-made frozen pizza crust?

And this gets to the heart of my problem with her. I think she's a huckster. She claims that she is showing people how to make "homemade" food but more convenient but most of her recipes take MORE time than just doing it from scratch with maybe one or two minor shortcuts. They are also way more expensive than they need to be.

In the Naan case, you can buy frozen pre-made Naan. So why go to the trouble of buying pizza crust instead and making it into Naan when you can just buy the Naan and pop it in the oven with no extra work?

Anyway, I think her not telling anyone she has a disease with a large lifestyle component until it was luctrative for her to do so while then claiming that she waited so she could bring something to the table and help people is just par for the course. It's just another hypocritical "say one thing while doing another, it's all about me making money and not about helping people at all while pretending it is" act on her part.

Okay, I'm an idiot. I had Paula Dean mixed up with Sandra Lee whom I absolutely can not stand for reasons stated above. (Pretending to show people how to make convenient somewhat home-coooked meals that aren't convenient at all and are just garbage.)

But I am still not happy that she chose to wait to announce her illness until she got an endorsement deal. I am also not a big fan of celebrities endorsing prescription medicine. I thinks it's symbolic of a lot of what is wrong with our medical system and it makes the problem worse and not better.

I'm not familiar with Sandra Lee, but Paula Dean has always annoyed me. Her recipes tend to be over the top, as far as I can see. I was looking for a new broccoli casserole recipe a few weeks ago, and came across one of hers. Please tell me why I should saute the broccoli in butter, use mayo AND cream cheese, before adding the cheddar and topping it with more butter?

I agree about the negative impact that celebrity health endorsements can have. I'm not saying that some are not well meaning in their motivation to help others, or that they should not be paid for their endorsement. The very fact that Dean waited 3 years to go public with a virtually pandemic disease process, much of which is of our own making, seems to me to be a bit on the opportunistic side, and not the positive kind. It is her business to go public or not with her diagnosis. That's her own business, and I truely hope that she has taken steps to make healthier changes in her life. What bothers me the most is that she does not seem to be committed to lead by example after going public. I saw one of her frozen dinners in the freezer section of the grocery store last night on my way home from work. I didn't have time to look at it, but I will go back today to see if this is a "new and improved" version of Paula!! LOL I will still never try it.

I never cease to be amazed at my fellow health care coleagues becoming involved in the "latest and greatest" new diet plan. We all know that losing weight is not easy. I don't claim to be an expert. I do know that before my WLS I still would not have chosen to use any of Dean's recipes.

Like many of us, I have been on a "diet" my entire life. LOL, I think that's part of the problem. It's not about diet, it's about a lifestyle of choice. Moderation is a good word, but it comes down to choice each time we decide to eat and the activities that we choose to engage in.

OK, it's 6:30 in the morning, and I I am waffling. I will get down from my rambling soap box now.

Have a Great Weekend!

I jus****ched her on Today Show and she really danced around the questions about "have you changed your eating"?  Al Roker kept asking and she just said well I always said moderation.  She only said she does not drink sweet tea now...  Paula, Paula

Some people can be really stubborn.  My F-I-L was diagnosed with Type 2 and he eats (and drinks) a very typical southern diet.  When he simply cut out the sweet tea and mountain dew he lost a few pounds and his sugar levels returned to normal.  It didn't last long though.  He went back to consuming lots of sweets and now compensates by injecting insulin!

He has a typical diabetic belly and looks 8 months pregnant.
