Paula Deen Has Diabetes. PS. SO WHAT?
I think some of you are being a little unfair.......
I am from the south...we fry everything here...Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, pickles, moonpies, oreos, chicken ...you name it we can fry it.......Doe that make it ok....ummm NO.......
Granted Paula may not cook the healthiest and has made comments on her show that the way she cooks should not be the normal 365 day. Her son has a show starting where he takes Paula's recipes and makes them helthier.
With that being said...no one is holding a gun to your head and telling you to eat fat and junk...that is a decision that you made on your own. It is all about moderation and you all learning how to eat. Which is what got most of us in the predicament that we are all in where we are here looking into or have had WLS and to help with our eatting habits and being healthy and.... living.
Just like a conversation I had today...most people are lazy about cooking ...it is easier and can be cheaper to get fast food. Does that make it ok to eat crap all the time? No it should be all about moderation.....However... there are the excuses...no time to cook and being too busy or too late to cook.,,,,,,which some that I have made. People wonder why the kids are obese...they are learning from us....If we dont get out and move then most likely the kids won't either. I grew up where you stayed outside and the only reason you are inside is to get bandaged up or it is storming. We didnt have video games to baby sit us.....
I guess bottom line I am saying don't blame other people for the choices that you make...unless you are tied down and they are forcing you to eat crap. Then there are bigger issues that you must deal with....
Sorry I will get off soapbox now...

I'm not offended by any of the posts on here.
I'm type II diabetic and I'm not fat, I exercise daily and eat really well most of the time. At the moment I am well controlled on Metformin, diet and exercise.
Genetics screwed me, I think, both parents and older sister all type II.

I agree with Kim S. I can see why some would say - "who didn't see this coming." but at the same time, how can we know that she eats on a daily basis like the recipes that she offers in her show. I myself like PD and have enjoyed making a few of her recipes - but then again, most of them I would only make during a holiday period or a special occasion. I have a husband & mother with diabetes and both of them deal with the disease in very different ways. My husband is from TX and loves southern food, but is not accustomed to eating it on a daily basis due to his sugar issues. He is very good about sugar free food and eating healthy and as he only has 1 kidney that is important. My mother on the other hand is a terrible eater. She is 77 and thinks she knows everything, and hides candy in the house - with the "ruse" that she needs it for when she bottoms out. She has also already lost 2 toes due to her illness and gets cellulitus at least 2 times a year in a leg or foot due to this, and also has ulcers that don't heal on her feet.
I don't believe that it is what we advertise to others, so much as the personal choices that we make. If PD does write a recipe book that would offer some of her recipes in a healthier light - then by all means - please do so.... I will buy it! I had my surgery in July and my sugar came right down - I have been looking for a few recipes to make that are sugar free - that are still very good or have the same consistency as regular ones..... perhaps she will come up with it. More power to her on that end. Did she sidestep some direct questions? yes she did... but that doesn't mean that she isn't taking it seriously.... we don't know. I hope that she does, cause I don't wish diabetes on anyone friend or foe. Anyways - just saying my thoughts.
