OH/Facebook Question

My profile and pictures are viewable only to me because I value my privacy and want to choose who sees what.  Does that protect me somewhat from my information being put on Facebook?  I know pictures in my posts would be viewable if someone searched but what about the pictures in my profile?

I don't know the answer to your question....I have many of my own.

I JUST reset my profile back to public (changed my displayed name, to my user name) but I realized that I have nothing to hide...so, I did freak out a couple of days ago when one of my posts here, got uploaded overthere...I do not even have a facebook account!  Personal preference, no judgement to anyone  who does.

anywho. I decided that I'm not THAT important, and if the 2 people that I'm avoiding, really wanted to find me, they could do it other ways.

I refuse to  live in fear over the unexpected...especially since, they were each dear to me at least for a little while, once.

I hope somebody answers you tomorrow (today). Mean time. Im back!

I also have nothing to hide, and only post what I am willing to have be public. I refuse to live in fear of what might happen. I only post what I am willing to have be public.

I refuse to live in fear of what might happen. I have had my personal information researched and published by members of this forum in the most awful disparaging and threatening ways, and I refuse to take it personally or let it grind me down. I am not going to live at the effect of others- I did that long enough when I was fat. I refuse to not stand up for my values and ethics.

xian, I acknowledge and bless your attitude- it's a great way to take on life! Please stay back, and keep posting, and keep making a difference!

Thanks Anne.

Sorry to hear about that bad experience. I like feeling like I get to have this private space (OH) to share openly with people who have had a similar experience.

Because I was part of that first wave (10 years ago) we had to put up with a lot of ignorance, often from Medical professionals.  I just eventually got tired of educating every nurse, nurse's assistant, and janitor at hospitals, or whereever I found myself...even physicians were (and honestly still are) very ignorant of the surgery overall.

Most of the people that know me, now, have only known me "normal" weight-wise.
If I had my choice, I'd rather be able to share only with fellow WLS patients. We get it, because we have to.  Normies do not. God bless them, but I don't need to be the instructor all the time.

ya know? Yeah, ofcourse you do.

hee hee.

I have nothing to hide, either, but I like to choose who I tell what.  When I had my revision I didn't tell a lot of people because I felt like I had failed with my first surgery and people would just expect me to fail a second time.  And I just don't like having to explain myself.
I know many people who are MO and have researched WLS and there is no reason to think that they wouldn't come across OH's Facebook and I really don't want to be the cover girl for WLS.
I never added OH on Facebook because it wasn't a private group.  If I want people to know my medical history I will tell them, and not through Facebook.

Unfortunately the internet is public, and it does not matter who publishes what where, no matter how "private" a site or a posting is. I cannot control what anoter person or site does with the information I or another person publishes.

Does that make it right or fair? Of course not. But it is the way it is.

I m the only person who can and will create my own sense of safety and boundaries and ethics. Oh, and values. But that doesn't mean that another person will agree with them. Or honor them, for that matter.

I think EVERYTHING you say makes total sense Anne . But please remember that you are a relative newcomer here and OH has been a certain basic ( relatively open ) way since U arrived . OH USED to be a much more private space when I first started coming here in 2006 or 7.

Many old time posters here have NEKKID literally Naked ( or just duct tape enhanced ) post PS pics on their profiles here ... have posted or blogged about REALLY personal information like post op sex , embarassing details of their relationships or divorce ....post op medical conditions that could and will affect getting life insurance, hired and the cost of insurance in general ..not to mention cross -addictions ...

you notice NOONE dares to discuss those topics ( or imports practically any pics at all) to the main forum anymore ...

Those posts and profiles were created under a different presumption of what OH would and could DO with them. I am wondering if THOSE innocent well meaning and exceedingly helpful posters' private information is safe ...

how about the stuff on my PROFILE ?!! can THAT somehow be brought to facebook ?

SHARING MY WLS IS AN OPTION I CHOOSE NOT TO TAKE !!!

Personally I think OH should put the option of NOT sharing a person's posts or making their profile accesible from other sites as part of our account management options . Virtually all applications that DO share information like google facebook etc have these opt-out buttons where the user can choose not to have their information cross-linked or shared with other sites .

OH, just how hard would it be if you see a post that would make good FB fodder in your opinion, to message that poster and say "Hey - we liked your post.  Do we have your permission to put it on our FB page?"

But noooo.....  that would be just too courteous.
