I wonder if its as much of a problem as we tend to THINK it is .. in the sense that many of us ( like me ) were virtual teetolaers before our bypasses . Of course I at least was a HUGE carb and excess food addict .
AFTER my RNY i discovered alcohol , specifically a glass or two of red wine with dinner .
I didn't NEED it and there were just as many days that I went without it as with it .. but I still drank exponentially more than I ever did before surgery .. and it felt weird .
About a year ago it got BORING . A couple of times I even woke up feeling a little queasy and I KNEW it was the alcohol .. and who needs it ?
I would say I am a " normal " person now .. neither addicted nor a teetolaer . I'm HAPPY with this state of affairs . For what its worth I'm not addicted to shopping, chocolate , gambling or anything else now either ( though grazing can still be a temptation )

I do think compulsive eating untreated can often lead to transfer addictions because they are similar patterns in the brain- the brain gets trained in to the addiction process.
I know for me I have that addictive pattern, and it is something I have to be vigilant about. I have been in recovery for many a year, and am grateful for the growing process.
Therapy with a good therapist specializing in the issues can be very helpful. It has been essential for me in order to get myself reprogrammed.
