Pre-Op Diet
RNY on 04/09/12
I would like a little feedback about the pre-op diet. I have read many posts on OH where most are on very strict diets. I am mostly seeing liquid diets. I am scheduled for RNY (I think, gastric bypass, same thing?) 4/6/12. My surgeon's pre-op diet is basically a 1200 calorie diet with high protein, low carbs, no sugar. Does this sound normal?
I was on a medically supervised diet for 6 months before my information was submitted to my insurance for approval. I think what a lot of people may be talking about, and in my situation, is the immediate preop diet. I was placed on a 10 day liquid diet preop and clear liquids today (my surgery is tomorrow).....The liquid diet per my dr. is 4 meal replacement protein shakes each day with 2 cups total each day of certain fruits or veggies. It really was not too bad at all. I understand the purpose is to reduce abdominal fat a little bit immediately preop and to reduce overall liver size. I also wonder if it is to wean off carbs even more. I feel great, that's for sure!
Good Luck to you and hope things go well as you prepare!

Anchorage, Alaska. I have been on Optifast before. I actually lost a lot of weight on it but then, of course, gained it all back.
My friend that recently had the surgery in Maryland was also put on Optifast. This is why I am a bit concerned.

I have seen pre-op diets that allow you to eat "regular" food with pretty strict guidelines. I have been on the liquid diet for 1 1/2 weeks so far (RNY scheduled for Monday). My doctor recommended Slim Fast but I don't like it. I found Lean Shake 25 at GNC and the nutritionist said it was perfectly acceptable.
I had the same diet, but with no calorie restrictions. I ate steak, chicken and veggies to my hearts content! I kept my proteins very high and the carbs under 40g and I lost 9lbs in my one week pre-op diet. I was told to follow the Atkins food guide for an acceptable food list. Was a great kick start to my weight loss and works to clean and shrink the liver the same as the optifast for many does. Was glad I didn't have to get tortured on a long liquid diet with the hunger hormone still working. I was satisfied and never felt hungry.
Your diet sounds OK. I was on Optifast for 2 weeks. The purpose of a pre-op diet is to shrink a fatty liver, but it is also good practice for post-op.
RNY and gastric bypass and roux-en-y are all the same thing.
Are you excited about your surgery?
