I ended up paying out of pocket after my insurance had originally approved me and then denied payment after. The original bill for the hospital portion was $58,000. I was given the option to pay the insurance rate of $15,000. They finally settled for a $10,000 cash payment.

Wow, I wasn't aware how lucky I am with my insurance- zip for co-pay for the surgery and $5 for an office visit. I guess I shouldn't be taking it so much for granted.

I have really good insurance but elected last year to have a $3500 maximum out of pocket coinsurance payment so the cost of my RNY was about $39,000 and I just got the bill for my portion and I need to cough up the $3500. It's going to take a while to pay that off and I  hope the hospital works out a reasonable payment plan. Ugh.

It sounds about right for me.
For laprascopic, there are often tools that are used only once for your surgery then discarded, or sent through a long sterilization process.  For lap surgery, there is need for longer time under anesthesia.  The hospital stay is a tiny part.

Full pay by my provincial insurance coverage.  Costs for out of province surgery was around 20,000.  Less if in province, but I was approved to go States-side for it.

Costs to me were part of the psych, travel costs to and from.   So lucky!!!!!
