He said my iron level is a 7.5 but should be closer to 14. I have no idea how to raise it. I feel like I've tried everything under the sun. I have an appt on 4/12 to see the hematologist....I hope he has some ideas cause I sure don't.

If you tried oral supplements and they haven't worked, you could ask for an iron infusion (by IV).

that sounds like a ferritin level not an iron level.  Iron should be around 50 or higher.

Have you tried tender irons from vitalady.com= they are carbonyl iron with the vitamin C already in them - they are easy to absorb, non=constipating and easy on the stomach.  They are 60mg capsules = if your ferritin is that low you would need to take atleast 3 at a time to start  = that should increase your level - you might need more but it would be good start.  YOu can  take them all together but not within 2-4 hours of any calcium or thyroid medication.

There is another iron that works really well but it is pretty expensive, so I always recommend the tenders first - they are called Proferrin - you take 2 at  a time but you have to break them in half and you take them without vitamin C and also not within 2-4 hours of calcium or thyroid meds.  Some people need to take a combination of the 2 with really tough iron level and ferritin levels to bring up.

The tenders work great on ferritin levels which is what your problem is so I would start there.

Before you go through an getting an infusion, I would try this iron, if you havent' already taken it

You can take Proferrin with calcium- I called the maker about this just to be sure. You can also take it with meals. It helps me because it's one less med time to remember. But it is expensive. I also only take one tablet, but then I am post menopausal.

I'm willing to try anything at this point. How expensive is it?

You are best off trying the tender irons I told you above they work great and cost $29.99 for a bottle 400 capsules - the Proferrin that she is talking about is $53.99 for a bottle of 90 tablets.  Granted many people that have a really hard time with there iron do try the proferrin and do great but that is after they try the Tenders and the great majority do well on the tenders.  Some end up using both and some use just one of them.  I personally take 3 or 4 of the tenders and my iron and ferritin levels are great.  The number you gave us is a ferritin level.  tender irons are know for working really well on ferritin levels.  The proferrin are known for working really well on low hemoglobin and hemacrit with are numbers when you are really anemic not just iron deficient.

I would recommend trying the tenders first - they are so much cheaper - they can get the bottle of 400 which has the vitamin C in them (make sure you get th 60mg ones) and take 3 of them at bedtime and not within 2-4 hours of your iron or thyroid medication and you will be fine

The manufacturer says you can take it with calcium with they are doing research and finding that it isn't true - it is absorbed better if taken the same as other iron - 2-4 hours away from calcium and thyroid medication, so if the meal is a high dairy meal, you wont absorb it as well - I wouldnt' want to chance it with my bones in case it was right

I've been taking my morning vitamins all together now for over a year and a half, and so far my levels are good. It costs me $68 for a 90 day (1 tablet/day) supply of Proferrin on Amazon.

It probably would be safer to take my iron and calcium separately, but I know me and remembering to take vits multiple times a day. I can manage 2, at most 3 times a day.
