Shrinking the size of the liver via the pre-op diet...
I'm on an extremely low-carb/high-protein pre-op diet that conists of:
- 1 protein shake for at least 1 meal (I drink one for breakfast though, it could be used for all three) or I can change out one of them for 6-8 oz. of lean beef, poultry or fish
- 1 low-carb fruit (an orange or apple)
per day.
I can have unlimited amounts of sugar-free jello, raw/steamed vegetables, Crystal Light.
I have been on this diet since last Sunday (25 MAR) and have since lost 7 lbs (which is a good thing since I had gained about that many back by allowing myself the occasional indulgence too frequently, obviously) since learning of my insurance approval and date of scheduled surgery.
However, I've made a horrible mistake:
Though it wasn't on the list of approved foods, I wanted to see if the sugar-free jello pudding cups were comparable to the sugar-free jello...in error, I compared the sugar-free jello pudding to the regular jello and found the pudding to be lower in carbs...unexpected WIN, or so I thought...yesterday, just to confirm, I made the right comparison and found out that I've been consuming a high-carb snack...so now I'm off the pudding completely, but I'm wondering if I've sabotaged the effort to shrink the size of my liver...
Can anyone relate? Has anyone on this forum made the same/similar mistake? Have I completely screwed up my surgery?

I think you will be ok. How long is your preop diet?
I have learned from a long time on these boards, that surgeons are different. My preop diet was only 2 days, not two weeks. It didn't cause issues with my surgery,
You can call and talk to your surgeons office. Own up to the mistake, and tell them you are back on track now. Odds are good, that they will tell you all will be ok.
Best of luck with your surgery.

The truth is that it takes months of low carb dieting before your liver actually begins to shrink. What a low carb diet 1-2 weeks does do is remove the slimy glycogen coating the outside of your liver and this helps make your surgeons job easier.
