Tax deductible

Does anyone know if protein and vitamins are tax deductible due to the medical necessity after having gastric bypass? Someone said this to me recently and I'm wondering how true it really is. I've never heard of this before

I'm not sure if protein is but vitamins are if you get a letter of medical necessity from your Dr.

protein isn't, but vites are.  To deduct on your taxes, you medical expenses need to be rather significant - over 7.5% of your income.  But if you have a flex spending account at work, you can get reimbursed for the vites, just need to have the doc write a prescription each year and turn it into the administrator.  I got one for this year and have no trouble getting reimbursed.

I just had my taxes done and was able to deduct protein, vitamins and fitness club dues due to the medical condition known as morbid obesity diagnosed by a medical doctor.  As a previous poster stated, I had to exceed 7.5% of my adjusted gross income, which I did in 2011 due to surgery, mileage to all the doctor appointments, copays, etc.

This year I will keep track of all that stuff, but without a major medical issue such as a hospitalization, I will not be able to deduct it for 2012.
