Did/does your surgeon tell you everything about WLS...

Do you have some sort of protein and vitamin/mineral supplement plan in place? What happened to you should never happen. People can quickly become severely ill if they ignore the post-op eating and supplement needs.

oh yeah, i do! My surgeons nurse called 3 days after the surgery and asked how i was, if i was drinking and getting in my protein. Plus by that time I had read a lot on here and knew to aim for at least 60grams. Though all they've told me to take as far as vitamins is a multi. I've been reading on here tha tI need more than that and will soon be implementing that. I might have fallen through the cracks but I'm certainly not gonna let my health go that route!

WOW! this is more scary! Only blind faith I have is in my LORD and Savior and my husband. All others have to work for it
I found this site way before i had surgery, I joined it actually 2 years before I finally decided to do it. Also joined several yahoo groups that have since died.
I felt as I posted before I wanted to know everything that it was my resposnisiblity to know.
Anywho. I am worried that your care is so different. I had surgery in novemeber went for follow up  12 days after surgery and if i got to follow protocal I would have went back 3 months then six months 1 year and then 18 months then 2 years ..and then once a year. Unfortuanelety I didnt get to do that I was in his office to the point I was known by every employee and I use to joke I should be getting paid since I was there at least once a week for over three years. My surgeon was right there with me.
I picked Ronnie keith, because of his knowledge, his ability. Our first meeting I thought what an arse and for the next meeting I changed my opinion and knew he was the one.
I went to support groups until one of the moderators asked me not to come or if i did not to say anything that I scared newbies with my bluntness and thats whn I wrote my surgeon a mean letter and asked why is that I can not voice my opinions and my story.. still no answer. So I quit going to support groups I even quit getting on here. and found out that the folks that were coming to meetings because of me quit going. You will find support here where u wont find any where else

My surgeon told me about many potential complications.  I actually had a form I had to sign, it was several pages long, listing different possible complications and I had to read and initial each one, then sign at the bottom.  It was pretty comprehensive, but there were a few things I've learned since surgery that I was not informed about.

For instance, he did not mention reactive hypoglycemia, which apparently is quite common after RNY.  He led me to believe that all RNY patients dump, and I've since learned that is not true at all.  He downplayed the risk of nutritional deficiencies, although he mentioned them, and also gave me some very bad advice about what supplements to take (for instance, he advised me to take calcium carbonate, which RNY patients cannot absorb).

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

Kelly I only dump on certain meats. Or did. My tolerance for sugar OMG I can eat it just like before surgery.
I have iron definicies, calcium, potassium, mageniusm, I have problems with bleeding in my intestines, bowel runs, my teeth have went to pot, when I bruise it takes months to heal and then I have t to watch to make sure the color goes lighter not darker, I have had phebitis three times and flare ups from MRSA (currently on my 5). I am immune to certain antibiotics now and have malnutritional problems even though I do vitamins and supplements daily.
BUT there is light in my tunnel.

I have to say that my surgeon was pretty thorough about telling me the cons as well as the pros. He required a pre-op quiz on all the surgery types, and you had to pass before you could even get a consult. Then when I met with him one-on-one, he quizzed me again.

I think DS surgeons tend to be more up-front with their patients about the potential risks, because the DS is a more aggressive surgery---while any form of WLS can kill you, the DS can kill you quicker if you don't understand it.

So given how well you educated yourself ahead of time, you must know then that your situation is extremely unusual. Just as some patients will never have a complication and easily lose and maintain 100% of their excess weight, there are people such as yourself on the other side of the bell curve. Most fall somewhere in the middle.

Yes, my surgeon provided me with information about risks.  I also read quite a bit about the surgery so that I could choose  a surgeon who I believed would have a lower complication rate.

To tell you the truth, I didn't think my surgeon's prognosis was all that rosy.  He was quite stern on what it would take to make this work.

I'm sorry you've had a rough time of it, but it sounds like you had a lot of information before you chose WLS.
