I've seen D3 in a sublingual form and also a chewable. Either of these should be okay for rny patients, right?

Yeah.  Except if the sublingual is a liquid, I would read the ingredients to make sure it's not made with oil.

What if you're more than 2 years out and not malabsorbing anymore? Can you take the oil pills then?

Even after two years, you may be malabsorbing fats to some degree.  If you feel sure you're not, then yeah, the pills in oil would work.  I can tell you that, at 3.5 years out, I do still malabsorb fats to some extent.  This is gross, I know, but I can tell when I poop.  If someone wants a more detailed explanation, I'll give it, but I'll leave it at that for now.

That's 'cause most people are vitamin D deficient before they ever have surgery.  All the people I know that haven't had WLS that have had their vitamin D tested were low - my mother's was only 15, and my sister's was something like 50.  I suspect the reasons for such widespread deficiency are that people spend so much time indoors and wear sunscreen if they are out in the sun for long, and that we tend to eat lousy diets.  But I also wonder if all the pollution in the atmosphere interferes with our ability to synthesize vitamin D from sunlight and I wonder if all the chemicals and stuff in food interfere with the vitamin D in food.
