1 week post op... not losing

I had surgery (RNY) on the 21st, and since I got home from the hospital I am not losing anything. While in the hospital for 2 days I lost 7lbs, but now nothing. I have fluctuated up and down a pound but no real weight loss. I thought it was supposed to be the most rapid right now. This is really discouraging. My doctor's office said it might just be fluid weight from the IVs in the hospital and it seems like I'm doing everything OK. I get in my protein (around 75g daily) and fluid (atleast 64oz daily) which has equaled out to like 500-800 calories a day. Is that too much? How much do most people eat on the pureed diet calorie wise? I sure hope I start seeing some weight loss soon.

I gained 8-10 pounds in the hospital and it took a couple weeks to lose it. Work your plan and stay off the scale for a few days at least. You're not on mushies already are you?

Not trying to be rude - but are you kidding me?

Your body is still recovering from a major insult (the surgery). Stop even THINKING about your weight and just work on getting your liquid and/or protein in. There is NO WAY you can have the surgery and not eventually lose weight. Don't stress yourself out. You really might want to consider staying off the scale for the most part during the honeymoon period if you are gonna do this to yourself.

Don't surgeons talk to patients pre-op any more? Sheesh.

Hang in. It'll be okay. Actually it'll be better than okay but you have to have *some* patience.

I am 2 weeks out today and have only lost 8 pounds so I have been panicking also because it
seems everyone loses 20 lbs or more the first month and I'm no where near doing that
I wish you the best maybe we just need to be patient although I don't have any Lol

I gained 20 lbs while in the hospital.  It took me at least a week to lose that.  You are doing fine.  To be able to get your protein in and fluids in already is great.

Stay off the scale for a while,  you are doing fine.

Hi!   On my first post op visit I weighed only one pound less than pre surgery!  They assured me that this wa normal.  I lost the next week, but on week three gained a half a pound.  I was sure that this surgery wasn't working for me, ( I had previously has the band and that didn't work).  I listened to the group here and they all said not to worry.

I had my surgery on the 28th of Feb, and have lost 49 lbs now.  I couldn't get in all the required fluids and meals in in the beginning, looks like you're doing great with that!  Just keep going and follow your dietary recommendations to the  "T" and you'll do fine!  Best of luck! Sharon

Breathe in, breathe out.

Relax......

STAY OFF THE SCALE if it is going to drive you batty.

Please remember that weight loss is not a straight or quick jumb to goal weight.  You will stall, your body will change, all of which are perfectly normal.

You are not eating too much.

Good luck.

Judy

Thanks so much for responding everyone. I will take the advice and not look at the scale for a few days. I have definitely been stressing myself out. I'm just scared of something going wrong, because I have worked hard just to get to where I am... I don't feel like I had surgery a week ago, my recovery has gone very well I guess I just need to give my body a chance. It is nice to know other people have seen similar things.
My doctor put me on pureed "smooth" food when I was sent home from the hospital. The day of surgery I had nothing, then clear fluids the next 2 days, as of Wednesday I am on pureed, and if all goes accordingly at my two week post op I am going to move on to solids (thank goodness! )
How many calories a day should I be taking in? I feel like I'm taking in more everyday, and it scares me because I'm scared of eating too much. I don't seem to be satisfied after meals, I always finish all of what I portioned myself and then wish I had more. I'm guessing because I am not on solids yet, I hope that changes. :p

Yes, you'll still feel hungry while you're on the pureed foods. Things are going through your digestive system at a much more rapid pace, and you're not absorbing a good deal of what's being taken in. Once you get to have some solids, you'll feel more satiated.

I know what you mean about not feeling like you had surgery. My recovery was pretty easy and I was back at work very shortly afterward. The surgeon did recommend staying away from the scale for at least two weeks. Your body retains a *ton* of water when it's trying to heal. When I do a particularly challenging workout, I notice a gain of 2-3 lbs if I'm very sore. It's just because your muscles are holding onto water to recover. I promise it will go away.

Just keep getting that protein in. You're doing great!

There was a point about two weeks after surgery where I didn't lose anything for what seemed like forever. I was stuck at 223, 223, 223. Ugh it was sooooo discouraging and I was psyching myself out thinking that I would be the one in a trillion person who's body just wouldnt let go of the weight. But its only temporary. After surgery your body is still reacting and trying to figure out what the hell just happened to it. Stick to the plan as best you can and I promise you the weight will come off. And it will be really exciting and when you get on the scale you'll actually smile. Imagine that!! I'm down 36 pounds now and my surgery was April 10th.
