bowel movements

I'm 3 and a half weeks post op RNY. Is it normal not to have a bowel movement for 2-3 days at a time? Just wondering because I used to have daily b/m's pre-op. I get my protein and water in on most days. Some days I think I get in more protein than water!

Slow moving bowels seems to be a problem for many, myself included(evevnat 7 yrs p/o i usually go about every 2-3 days)...Protein has no fiber & at this stage neither does just about anything else you are consuming - that means you really need ALOT more water to keep you bowels flooded &"moving", only at this stage drinking alot is also difficult because your new pouch opening is probably kinda swollen & only letting a little thru at a time...I would suggest you ask your surgeon or nut if it is ok to add a fiber supplement, like miralax or metamucil to your water, this will help up the fiber you get and maybe keep you moving so you don't get constipated...Also, if you think about it, you are probably not consuming much food to actually pass as a BM...

I take 4 Fibercon tablets and plus 3 Colace (generic version) every day.  That keeps things moving.

Check with your surgeon to see what he/she recommends.  It is quite normal to have issues after RNY.

Thank you. You're right. I just thought it was strange. I noticed that eating applesauce and drinking more water helps with getting things flowing!!!

You probably need more water and fat.

I was very constipated after surgery. I even tried forcing myself to "dump" by eating a 600 calorie hershey bar. That didn't do anything to me, besides make me feel like I'd gorged myself on sugar. I went through a period where I tried chewable fiber tablets, and colace. But that never had definitive results. Now I use Philips Milk of Magnesia. I take 2 full caps of it, which I believe is 4 doses. Within 12-24 hours this stuff will work. But if I can offer one bit of advice, do not take it at bedtime, like the label suggests, take it in the morning.

Watch using benefiber/metamucil....you need to drink a lot of water when you take the suppliment or it will bind you up more >_< But yeah drink drink drinnnk!
And lots of walking.
Also I find Greek yogurt helps move things along, I suppose the probiotics are a big help.
My nut also suggested seneca tablets if things feel really bad, I've used them a few times.

My husband jokes that I've turned into one of the sloths in this video...."A sloth only goes to the bathroom once a week....so it's something to be savored" MUHAHAHA
