Is this normal - pre-surgery food coma?

Well not necessarily "COMA" per say.. but i have been dieting for a long time now. Since March 2011! I have lost 94 pounds on my own so far. My RNY is March 5th and i am feeling those "last minute to eat what you want feelings" Now i am NOT looking at going to taco bell, mcdonalds, burger king, wendys, and ice cream joints to soothe these feelings.. but i did however want to have one more frozen yogurt from the place we go to w/toppings and maybe a dinner with my family at a nice sit down restaurant where i can order what i want without necessarily picking from the low calorie menu. I feel like these are horrible feelings i am having. I am very motivated but i know i likely won't enjoy these foods the same after surgery not necessarily the amount but the foods. I do NOT plan to pay for it with any kind of pain either. So my solution i simply don't eat them after surgery.

My pre-op diet is starting Feb 20th.. it is 2 weeks of LOW CALORIE like 1000-1200 calories/day. Do you think i would be okay going out to dinner and frozen yogurt ONE NIGHT without sabbotaging myself? I obviously plan to go to the gym afterwards. I just don't know if my thinking is all wrong right now or even normal. Is it?

I don't have much advice to add here other than to say that you shouldn't think of it as the food you are giving up and will never have again. I know every time I dieted I have had this thought many times, and its a sabatogey thought to have.  That being said everything in moderation! Maybe choose the dinner or the ice cream. But congrats on losing so much already! That in its self is a huge accomplishment!

I would say it is normal. I also had my "last meal and testament!" Didn't gorge but thoroughly enjoyed my steak! There will be foods you will eat again, just not for a long time. What I told myself was that any food I wanted, I had already had before. Nothing new under the sun.

I don't think one dinner out and one frozen yogurt is sabotaging yourself.   But why do you think you won't enjoy those foods after surgery?  I LOVE frozen yogurt now as much as I did pre op.  I limit the amount I eat so that I don't dump on it and I don't eat it real often because it's low in protein, but I eat it once in a while.  Most people tolerate most foods just fine after WLS.

Oh because the place we once used to frequent is not a no-sugar added yogurt place so i am sure it's loaded with sugar. Obviously still not as bad as ice cream but yeah... i will not allow myself to eat this crap and clench over the toilet as i am puking it all back up or in gut wretching pain... sugar is a huge no no and i know that

angry Congrads on the big weight lose so far. Check out the calendar for the time you have until your pre-op dieting starts. If you have to be at a certain weight on surgery day, I say be careful and remember "mindful eating." Post op it will be along time before partying food wise too.

I always look at what it is going to get me or what am I going to loose. If the outcome for treats is positive and or no effects, then go for it. If it will make you gain unwanted weight prior to surgery, I would skip it.

Final choice is yours.wink

Blessed and Healthy life for you.

I had my one "last meal on Saturday night and then actually started my preop diet two days early on Sunday. It was nice to sit with friends, eat a lobster, not worry about how many slices of bread I ate and then have a slice of chocolate cheesecake. And the, on Sunday, we went for a three mile walk and I started my 20 carb per day preop diet.

I dont think there's anything wrong with it and I considered it a celebration, not a better get it in while I can meal. Obviously, if you have to meet a specific weight, then there are other restrictions you have to be concerned about, but that's not an issue for me.

I'm very impressed with the successful loss you've achieved on your own (yay YOU).  Your feelings of last meal syndrome are normal, and I say enjoy a night, or a weekend of everything you absolutely love before your official pre-op diet begins, and remind yourself that you're probably not saying goodbye forever, but just for a little while...but you'll probably never need to eat as much as you will to feel satisfied again.

My 'last supper' was wings at Hooters.  Really...  took my husband and five daughters there because I was okay with the fact that it probably was the last time in my life I'd eat them!!  Don't really know if that's true or not but a month post op I can't even imagine eating it.  Craving it, yes, eating it, not so much...  You have done an AMAZING job so far, please don't feel one meal will sabotage you!  It's this crazy guilt thing we have about food that has gotten us in so much trouble in the first place.  Enjoy it, guilt-free.

My nutritionist told me to go out and eat whatever I wanted the day before my pre-op diet started. So I had two slices of pizza. I felt satisfied.
I'm a list maker. I made a check off sheets for my pre-op diet. Once everything was checked I knew I was done for the day.
Now post op I've made list again. Helps me keep to my agenda. My weight loss has been good. I've had no pain or nausea.
