Okay so the question I have should I use butter or a substitute like margarine or I think its call "so you think its butter or not".  I get confused because I thought your suppose to watch your fat intake I know your suppose to watch your sugar.  But in a post I read somebody mentioned that out bodies need fat.  Im just a little confused I star this week with mash potatoes or sweet potatoes and I would like to put something on them (a dab) thanks for all your help

What surgery did you have?  It's not on your profile.  It's true, your body does need fat, but the procedure type will determine how much and what kinds.

If you had RNY, then your body may react to the fat in the butter (may not).  Margarine has more bad things in it than good, so if anything, I would go for light butter if you're trying to keep fat lower.  If you've got a VSG, then no adverse reactions, but don't go butt-wild.   If you've got a DS, gob on the real thing and enjoy.

If you had RNY, I can almost guarantee the mashed potatoes will hurt you worse than the butter. Even if you don't dump, there is no way you will be able to meet your protein requirement at the soft food stage if you are eating potatoes. I do personally dump on any kind of simple carb, and potatoes are only enjoyed in moderation (I'm four years out). Please take a look at Shelly's blog for some better ideas, and good luck to you, my friend!

i think real butter in limited quantity is better than fake butter because of the chemicals. i would avoid the potatoes though. it sounds like you're in the early post-op stages and you would be better off focusing on protein and forgoing the carbs for a while.

I found Brummel and Brown Yogurt spread the best solution as far as low fat, great taste and easy spreadability.  If you do eat potatoes, remember a spoonful is a lot.  I did so mashed potatoes a few times, but one a teaspoon or so at a meal.
