Oh, brother. News story: Erie woman drops to 62 lbs after bypass...
I did...actually I only weighed 208 when I signed into my surgeon's office...My BMI was over 35 tho and had co-morbids...I only had 63 lbs to lose to get to a normal BMI.
Making a judgment based on initial weight is not right...that is totally between the person and their doctor. We don't all have to be SMO to want help.
Duodenal Switch (Lap) 01-24-11 | Surgeon: Stephen Boyce | High weight: 250 in 2002 | Surgery weight: 203 | Lowest weight: 121 | Current weight: 135 | Goal weight: 135
Right before my surgery in 2008, I had MANY people tell me that I was crazy to get this surgery, that I was going to die, have complications etc. I was WELL educated and my immediate family attended my seminars and some dr's appts with me to also become educated. We are a WLS family as my dad had it first and I went through the process with him, then I had it and our family went through the process again with me and finally my sister had it and we all went through the process again with her. It is very important that family is educated as well as it may make it easier for them to accept. But they may never accept your decision to get the surgery! You can respectfully tell them that this is a decision that you are making for your health. This story is one of the shock stories and it is horrific. I feel badly for the woman with her issues. Not sure what she did or didn't do but the end result of her losing so much weight and becoming ill is very sad. Direct your family and friends to OH. This site really helped to further educate me and give support. I think that there are a lot of success stories here that can be helpful. God bless you on your journey.
We hear about the complications in the news because the successes are too numerous. This is indeed a very serious, sometimes life threatening surgery not to be taken lightly or as an 'easy way out.' I'm grateful the horror stories get in the news because WLS is way too glamorized!
This storey is a perfect example of the lack of education and awareness about WLS.
While this woman may have had other issues that aren't mentioned, it could very well be a lack of education. Personally I had no idea what I was getting into when I had mine in 2008. I never guessed I'd be taking hand fulls of vitamins and supplements each day, have low blood sugar and would be getting B-12 injections.
On days or weekends when I don't eat enough protein or liquids, I can easily spend the day in bed with no energy, just as the subject says she does.
Lastly, this experience is extremely not typical. Otherwise we'd have a 'Too Much Weight Loss' forum instead of hundreds subscribed to a 'Weight Regain' forum.
