After surgery, is recumbent bike = walking?

VSG on 06/12/13
Good morning!

Was just pondering my after surgery routine. I am planning on walking walking walking after I get home. I have also read that strenuous walking should be avoided. Our neighborhood is full of hills, which of course increases the strenuousness of the walking. We have a recumbent bike in the basement. Would that be a good first step before strapping on the sneakers and hitting the pavement? I could always manage to get to a treadmill at the gym, as well, but worry about the effort of getting there that early on.

Whats my best option?

I was hiking a week after surgery - not sure why a few neighbourhood hills would be out of the question!   Just get and do something - unless you have complications, I don't see any reason why you can't walk on any paved terrain ...

You'll read lots of reasons why you "shouldn't' do things after surgery, but we are all different - some people are great at making excuses and others just get on with it - you can decide which you are.   Your body will tell you how much and for how long you will be able to walk - don't let other people determine your success from the get go!

Best advice I can give you is to be positive - I see so many people on here who are looking for problems before they even start - the vast majority of us sail through WLS, so there's a really good chance you will too.

Most people who come here do so because they have or think they have a problem - it skews the reality that most of us don't post because we have nothing to say - What are we going to say?  "I can eat/drink fine, work out fine, and am losing a bucketload of weight without stalling!"  Not likely to go across so well LOL!

Very best of luck with your surgery - I know you have had to fight really hard for this and you deserve a complication free recovery!!

Thanks so much. I am hoping the ease with which I have gotten myself onto a 20g carb diet for the past 2.5 weeks is a preview of what's to come. To prepare, 3 weeks ago I joined a gym, hired a trainer, and started working out on a regular basis. I can see and feel a difference in my body already and I think it has set me on such a nice trajectory to success. Just ready to sail on thru! Thanks for your support and kind words. :)

Recumbant bike is a good choice for cross training and for inclement weather, but it is not considered a 'weight bearing' exercise, so it does not help to strengthen your bones.

walk as best you can  and use the bike when you need to

Best of luck!!!

Thanks! Just what I was looking for. Was hoping it could help with the gas, as well.
