9 years post op--can't eat meat
Hi y'all!
Just thought I'd pose a scenario which maybe someone else has gone through. I am 9+ years post op and within the last month have begun having difficulty digesting any type of meat. I've tried chicken, beef, pork, turkey and seafood and all of them leave me horribly uncomfortable, nauseous and with stomach pain for HOURS afterward. It took me a while to narrow it down to realize it was meat, but once I did, I have worked to avoid it at all costs. Which we all know is problematic post-op for anyone with WLS. (I had RNY.) Since my surgery, anytime I have stomach/digestive questions I call my surgeon first I figure that they 'get' my funky digestive tract. So, I called my surgeon's office the other day and spoke to the nurse and they want to see me on Tuesday since i haven't been in since 2011. Not sure if it's a bad sign that they wanted to see me so quickly or if it was just luck that they had an opening. I was just curious if anyone else has experienced this problem.
Thanks!
Michelle
Avoiding meat isn't problematic for anyone with WLS. I haven't eaten meat in about 27 years. However, if you've suddenly become unable to tolerate it, I think you're doing the right thing to call your surgeon. I don't know what might be causing it but I hope they can figure it out for you.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.

Maybe a caveat? It IS problematic for the DS which is one of the four main WLS types. It may not be for those who had the RNY but for the DS, it would be a major issue.

MICHELLE-I'm a 11 yr post RNY and 35 yr career nurse...Sounds to me like you are doing everything right. KUDOS for making apt with your surgeon. It sounds like perhaps something has scratched the lining of guts, and now they are inflamed, or have developed a stricture. Or..there can be an internal hernia, that will not allow denser food (such as meat) be digested. This can happen at any stage of our journey. Personally, I STILL cannot eat pork..no way/no how..no idea why...just one of those "things"..I've given up trying..It's not worth the pain...
I bet your doc offers..but in case he/she doesn't..please insist on an at least an EGD..you need to know what's going on inside...I know you are tempted to "stay off meat", due to what it does, but, honestly, I think you should eat some, on Tuesday morning, so the doctor can see what the meat does to you (if you have someone to drive you)..
I look forward to reading your update. Us old timers are kind of the "guinea pigs", you know..We seem to come out with some of the weirdest stuff..like me and the stupid pork--I could probably eat a water buffalo..but not a pork chop...weird..

We Can Do Hard Things
Hello again!
Had my appointment with my surgeon today. She is thinking possible narrowing out of the stomach and/or acid reflux. She ordered an EGD, she wanted it done within a week, so I go for that on Monday with a gastroenterologist which they referred me to. I also got an order for a boat load of bloodwork. In the meantime no acidic foods, caffeine, carbonated beverages, tomatoes or citrus. Plus I am still off meat. Should be interesting!
I will keep you posted and thanks for the support!
