Metformin?
I am taking 500mg ER at evening time with my dinner, the only meal of the day I get lol. To be honest this is only my second night, the first night, last night, man my belly was pissed. It's been 3 hours since I took it tonight and I can already feel the cramping start, and I really am not looking forward to being woke up at 1 or 2 am again with toilet issues. I spose I'll give it a few weeks before I whine to my doc. My HgbA1C is actually 6.6 or 6.8 I forget which.
Most organizations now use a HgbA1c of 6.5 or higher as the cutoff for the diagnosis of diabetes and 5.7 - 6.4 as being at increased risk for diabetes. Good luck over the next few weeks. On the plus side, metformen is also associated with a modest weight loss. A trial of diet and weight loss is considered adequate initial treatment for a HgbA1C under 7.0.
I have been on metformin for the past 7 years.
The GI issues tend to resolve after about 2 weeks on the medication. You'll notice though that your BM's aren't as solid as they once were.
A nice side effect of metformin is that you will lose some weight on it, and not because you're always in the bathroom!
When I was diagnosed last year, and prescribed Metformin, my physician started me on one pill for a week, titrated the pills up each wee****il I was taking four a day. It took a month to get there but the side effects were minimized that way. The night before my vertical sleeve surgery, I took four Metformin and one pill for hypertension, The night of surgery, the surgeon informed me that I my two conditions have been resolved and I no longer have to take the meds. Score one for me! Now l I take is my daily supplements.
Just to let you know, I was pre-diabeti****il one day... POW! I found out the hard way, that my blood sugar shot up to 600 range. This happened twice, within two weeks, with two trips to ER and finding out that I needed to take Metformin, which, by the second trip to ER and a blood sugar reading so high it was off the charts, I found out that I was allergic and was quickly sentenced to be a needle carrying insulin user for life. During the second week, my friend and co-workers mother died from a diabetic coma, and her blood sugar reading was at 627. Okay that cost me my perfect vision, and pushed me to get my act together for having RNY. Now I just monitor my blood sugar daily still, but I do not take insulin since my blood sugar level ranges from 87 to 95 now. I was told that would only need it if I got to the 150 range. I'm not gonna risk my health for a sweet treat these days. I am constantly reminded just how serious pre-diabetes and diabetes can be since I have to use glasses for close up work all the time now.
Wow thank you for sharing that. I do definitely take this serious and have been taking the Metformin daily since I originally posted this. I am still sugar free since the NP put me on this liquid/super low cal diet. My mother is diabetic and so is my SIL, whom I have watched lose toes and have horrible foot ulcers due to it. This is obviously something I do not want for me. SO I chose to deal with the occasional gastric upset if that's what it comes down to. Thankfully so far I have only had 2 incidences of really uncomfortable bathroom episodes. Though so times I feel a little foggy and dizzy. I'm hopeful it will pass.
NP assures me once surgery occurs and a little more weight comes off, I wont be worrying about diabetes and the medication. Here's to hoping. I am really sorry to hear that it has caused you issues with your vision.
I have been on Metformin in the past. I have PCOS and am/was insulin resistant because of it. I had the same reaction to it that you did, it was awful. I stopped taking it. I mentioned it post-op, and was told with my weight getting under control so quickly, I didn't need to take it.
That being said, everybody is different, and I'm certainly no doctor. Talk to your doctor about the side effects you've been experiencing, talk about how it ties in to your surgery. Hopefully together, you can figure out what works for you! Good luck!
