Bariatric Tongue??
My sense of smell heightened for a couple of months after surgery but it has pretty much returned to normal except for super strong smells. As far as taste buds, I think they are still the same but I do notice that I eat in cycles--certain yogurts for awhile or certain types of meat. I then tire of it and move to the next thing.
I've seen people talk about a "bariatric tongue" and I have no idea what that means. It sounds really gross.
Do you guys know what that means??
I use the term...basically for me it means that I have very different tastes post-op than I did before surgery. And sometimes I will make something that I love and my husband loves, but my son finds it unappealing. So then I have to dress it up in some way for it to work for both a standard tongue and the bariatric tongue.
In the beginning, I chalked it up to the need to brush my teeth 22 times a day, but my husband is out of the high loss period and it has remained for him. A number of people say that they have a different taste approach even years later. Which I guess is a good thing, because I literally don't even WANT bread for example and would be AOK if that is always the case. I can live without bread. :)
Hope that helps...and it is only my perspective, I am speaking for no others.
Hmm, no, that's not it. (At least I don't remember getting that impression when I read it. I remember it being more like something along the lines of what the others are suggesting (bad breath or something else gross).
But I see what your saying. Thanks!
I just had a little voice in my head say "palate" - like we have a different palate after surgery than before ... ?
Aaah yes, that makes sense. Is that what you were going for, PetHairMagnet? ("bariatric palate"?)
My tastes haven't really changed since surgery. I was extremely picky before and I'm still extremely picky. Haha! I was hoping that I would come out of surgery magically liking vegetables, but alas, my palate is still the same. Waaaaah!!
yes, YES I do think surely it means bariatric palate! I mean what else could it mean, ???? I will keep looking through old posts to help you out;0

Maybe at the beginning - when I was in ketosis - or after anesthesia - my taste buds were different.. but now - trust me - what I cook now (except my green shake sludge or some really weird mixture I make) if I like it - my "normal" friends also like.. (I am a great cook). My BF hates and can taste any artificial sweetener.. even natural stevia, and I have a few normal and post op WLS who hate that stuff, and some normal -and WLS friends that love it. During ketosis - things tasted differently - but now - there are not...
I think taste is so personal - and what one person likes - the other may not )take liver or gizzards - yumm... )

Ugh, I saw that article somewhere else. What a horrible idea. I actually think having my guts macrame'd sounds much less awful than that!!
