RNY patients can't take nsaids, but VSGers can, don't know about DS.

That's only RNY patients, and it's because of the huge, 'blind', remnant stomach left behind with the RNY. You can still develop ulcers in it, but it's the very devil to 'scope. With the Sleeve or the DS, there's no remnant stomach, and no greater risk in taking NSAIDs than for the general population. That was one reason (of many!) that I chose the DS over the RNY. I knew I would need NSAIDs for the rest of my life.
Hello, I only had to use pain meds while in hospital and 1 day at home. I think if you do plenty of walking and can move the gas you a much better off. Be cautious with your activity, too much will make you feel terrible for a few hours. Pace yourself and let you body tell you when to stop. Wishing you success!
I had open RNY on 11/18, I was on a dilaudin pain pump
on the day of surgery and till 5:30 PM the following day, I had a screaming headache from that pain med, I stopped the dilaudin and didn't take another pain med since. Don't get me wrong, I'm no super hero I just couldn't take the side effects of the pain meds. I'm feeling like a million bucks now though!
I know about the wearing out thing. After I had the twins I tried to walk down to the Nicu every 2 hours to breast feed and pump. I wound up passing out and taking a whole day off seeing them. It's important to listen when your body is wearing down. I feel like it's something only age can teach you >.
I had open RNY and they gave me pain meds in the hospital. I hated them and quit using them the day I left. I took a Tylenol one day when I was home but nothin once I left the hospital. The pain is not as bad as you think. I had a 10 pound baby and a C section. This was better. If you walk a lot the pain is minimized. the more you move the better you feel. I was driving 3 days after getting home because I wasn't on any pain meds. Went to a support group meeting. I didn't think it was bad at all - felt like I had done a couple hundred sit ups but that was muscle pain and not a biggie after a couple days. If you have done without pain meds after surgery in the past you should be ok.

I was in the same spot with my gallbladder, and I really hope my sleeve surgery recovery isn't that bad. The surgeon gave me vicodin, which didn't do squat for me other than make me sleepy, and it just plain sucked.
Luckily this surgeon says to call if the vicodin doesn't cut it and I'm in serious pain, I can call and he'll fax a different script to the pharmacy.

I had a morphine drip coming out of surgery. On the second day the nurse asked me if I knew how to use it because she said; "you've used it less than any patient we've had". I told her it was uncomfortable, but I didn't feel the need to use it except when I had to go do my "walking". She suggested taking a hit before I got up, and that way it would help during the walk - which I did. I got hydromorphine pills to take home but never used them.
Now, coming off the hernia surgery I had a year after my weight loss - I NEEDED those morphine pills. But after the sleeve...nope.
WOW...good for you. I can't imagine going through this without pain meds. Take the pain meds. Don't try to be strong. It will only hurt you in the long run. It is major surgery and it is painful. Take the help when offered. It is not a luxury it is a necessity. Trust me even with pain meds you will know when you have done too much or pushed too hard.
Blessings,
Pam
