Traumatic Experience

Your doctor had no business speaking to you this way. But doctors are part of the problem - they don't seem to know how to treat obesity.

Surgery date is Oct. 17th, 2013 in Ottawa. I was referred to the clinic in September 2012. The person performing my surgery is Dr Amy Neville.

Here's my two cents, speaking as someone who works in medical accreditation:

This is something that could/should be reported as a complaint to the provincial medical association (http://www.cpsa.ab.ca/InformationFor/public.aspx)

I'm inclined to take it as a violation of the Canadian Medical Association's Code of Ethics, which states (among other things) that a doctor must:

Practise the profession of medicine in a manner that treats the patient with dignity and as a person worthy of respect; and

Provide your patients with the information they need to make informed decisions about their medical care, and answer their questions to the best of your ability.

I don't think either of those were done well, if at all. If you were to open a complaint, yes the doctor would be made aware that you were the one doing it, but it's kind of a big deal to be called out professionally on treating a patient like crap, and the CMA would get involved in making sure that this doctor doesn't do it again. This sort of treatment is unacceptable, and NOBODY should have to deal with it.

During my last pregnancy I went to the obgyn for a check up and my gynecologists assistant was doing the basics.

When the nurse read my weight, the guy just started laughing.  I was lucky enough that I could ask him not to be in the room during my examination.

I would def. complain.  This was not okay, and it makes you feel violated in a place where there should be only trust.

Lecturing people when they are undressed and (obviously) defenseless is not okay.

I don't know anything about surgery in Mexico, I almost went to Belgium for mine (wound up having it in Montreal).

OMG, I feel so bad for you reading how you were treated by someone who is supposed to be a professional.  There must be some medical association in Canada where you can put on record the unprofessional way she acted.  I hope you find the right doctor for your needs.  Good luck!

I'm not sure about Alberta, but in Ontario (at least when I lived there), you could go to a walk in clinic to see a doctor and use them as a GP.  It's just a bit hard to get regular appointments because of their schedule.  I know that there was and is a huge shortage of doctors from my hometown (Cornwall, ON).  My mom drove 40 minutes to see a doctor who could take her.

What about calling the hospital(s) to see if they have anyone they can recommend?

I'm in the States now and it's much easier to find a doctor...depending on the type you need.

Good luck!

I am so very sorry, I had bad doctor experiences when I was MO also, but nothing that compares to what you just went though.  Honestly you need a pcp, find one who won't judge, I finally did after many years and she is a miracle.  I know its hard but you have to find a doctor to help with your aftercare, I am sure their is a good doctor out there, mine can't be the only one.

Good luck.

Hi fellow Calgarian! I unfortunately can't help you with a choice of doc because I don't live in Calgary anymore but maybe Linda can? Look up Spencerella on here - she lives in Calgary and also had surgery in Mexico. PM her and if she has a supportive doc who has been through the ropes already with her then maybe you can piggy back? Good luck and don't let your experience deter you from your plan!

I'm so sorry you endured that woman!  I had a doc humiliate me when I was only 14.  I burst into tears right in front of him.  I'm sure I made his day.  Dr. Aceves seems to be getting a good following of happy patients. You can get a list of required labs from him and hand it to a new doc at home.  Another thing I wanted to bring up is that Dr. Aceves also does the duodenal switch, something else you want to read up on.

Another doc in MX I would recommend is Gilberto Ungson.  He, in fact, taught Dr. Aceves how to do the DS.

I'm so sorry you went through that. She certainly does sound like an insufferable ****! Honey, you should have farted right in her face during the pap.

I dislike when we as obese people are treated like we're dumb, or don't care, or we're automatically lazy slobs. I had a cardiologist try to talk me out of RNY because "Weigh****chers works and I should try it before resorting to such an extreme measure." I wanted to punch him.
