I only wear New Balance.  My orthopedic surgeon had me start wearing them when I was topping out at my heaviest weight because I could get customized shoes. He has continued to have me wear New Balance exclusively even though I have dropped a ton of weight (literally).   My back issues don't handle any other brand of shoe (we have tried).

I go to a New Balance Corporate store where they fit me each time I come in.  This brand of shoes has helped my back/posture, as well as gait (which has changed significantly during weight loss and excess skin) and do an excellent job of supporting my feet when walking.

You have "dropped a ton of weight (literally)"?!?  I have never heard of anyone who weighed over 2,000 pounds...

14 years out; 190 pounds lost, 165 pound loss maintained

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

Be careful of the new Skechers.  I wore them for years at work (not unusual for me to do 4-6 miles on a shift, just in the department.)  I bought a new pair of the same style and I wore them one night.  The soles were too firm.  I had foot cramps for days.  They went back to the store.

I echo the recommendations of others.  Go to a running store and tell them what you are looking for.  They will help you find a good pair of basic/entry shoes.

Definitely invest in a good pair. I have Brooks Ariel. They were spendy, but I am not getting shin splints anymore. Overweight women tend to pronate their feet, which can lead to shin splints and knee pain. Find a pair that will keep you in a neutral position when walking. You also need to replace them every five hundred miles (or six months, some say).

I had what I thought were a good pair of Nikes. Perhaps if I wasn't overweight they might have worked, but since I am, they were causing extreme pain even during slow walks.

Support your feet and the rest will feel better!

Thank you all for the great suggestions and advice.  Now to find a specialty store.

I am  partial to New Balance because they have lots of support on the edges of your foot which makes your feet feel like they are walking (running) on clouds.
