TV Personalities and WLS: Is it taboo to mention WLS on TV?
Jackson has not kept it a secret. He wrote an autobiography where he talks about it. It seems to be the network and/or producers of the show that choose to treat it the way they did. It wouldn't bother me if he made the decision to keep it private, but he shows his before picture on the show and talks to the cat guardian about getting healthy. Presumably he talks to her about the surgery too, but the show edited that part out. That is what really baffled me. Why bring the topic up at all if you aren't going to discuss the surgery? Perhaps they were trying to protect the cat guardian's privacy. I just found the way the show handled the situation to be bizarre.

I think the major. Issue here it the publics perception of WLS.
Those who don't need to loose weight see it as " the easy way out" , as many have mentioned. They think losing weight is just a matter of not eating or just eating less. That is so far from the truth. At some point in our lives we had tried the conventional methods of weight loss. We may or may not have been successful. Each time was discouraging and the weight was regained, sometimes even more.
They are totally unaware of the dynamic many of us have with food and eating.
WLS Breaks the yoyo cycle. My favorite analogy is if you had to get around and couldn't walk, what would you do? Use a wheelchair , a cane, or crutches if necessary. Well, WLS is our crutch to a healthier, happy life.
The media, tabloids make it seem like something is wrong if someone needs WLS, when actually, to not take advantage of all the tools in the arsenal against obesity, is what is truly wrong.
