hey dana! i have been taking the correctol. i tried the prunes (yuck), but haven't tried MOM yet. i just want something to help get things somewhat normal. my tummy gets very tender to the touch, don't know if it is from not going. i definitely don't want to get addicted. years ago, i got so used to them, i could take one and GO in 15 minutes. doesn't seem to be making much of a diff now! i will definitely be talking to doc about this. thanks and hugs!

The other poster is right. The laxatives are not a good thing to take. My surgeon OKed the Colace -- I use the Colace WITHOUT laxative.

I must be truly blessed. I have never had to take anything to help me go. I haven't been constipated that I can remember in the last 20 yrs. As for the original poster, laxatives are not a good idea because as one of the answers said you will become dependent on them. My sister-in-law got herself into a world of health problems and it took nearly 3 years to get her body straightened out to where she could go without laxatives. Call your doc and get some help before your 6 months check up. willadeegee

The Rx laxative I take miralax is not habit forming....that is why it is an Rx....over the counter laxatives are usually habit forming. Not all laxatives are created equal. Sandy in Tucson

Abusing laxatives can cause dependency on them, for one. I have an elderly Aunt who has abused laxatives since she was in her 20's. She now has several blood disorders as well as adult onset leukemia, which they feel was brought on by years of taking laxatives. I've had a horrible time with constipation since surgery...especially taking iron. I take Colace regularly....Milk of Magnesia once or twice a week if needed and added 1,500 mg. of magnesium supplements. These have helped a lot. Jean RNY 5/24/05 255/178/150

I have had the same problem (as you know)... I remembered a couple of weeks ago: When I had my first child (18+ years ago), I ripped so bad they had to sew my other "youknowwhat" back together again. My girlfriends mother sent me a care package with tons of Evian water in it. I thought this was odd..... so I asked her about it. She said it would help me go to the bathroom "easier"....hence...easier on those stitches all up there. (Plus, I had to take 4 Iron pills a day for anemia). Well......I forgot all about that until two weeks ago. So, I said "I wonder...." I bought some one liter bottles and drank one every other day. So far....knock on wood.....I've gone almost every day. I'm not sure what exactly is making it work...except that it has minerals in it. I have also heard that magnesium supplements work...but I haven't tried that. If this Evian water keeps working...I'm gonna stick with that. I'm killing two birds with one stone! As far as laxatives....I've been fighting tooth and nail to NOT have to take them because they are addictive and you would have to keep increasing the dose over time for them to be effective. Other than that...I don't know what other damage it causes. I just didn't want to go there. I took MOM occasionally (works)....tried eating things with a ton of sugar alcohols (no luck)...even resorted to eating something deep fried and super greasy.(no luck)..so far....the Evian is working the best. Definitely talk to your doc about it and let us know how your check-up goes!! Hugs, Pam
