Why do they recommend a recliner??

Why do they recommend a recliner for post surgery recovery? Also, if getting recliner is not possible is a pillow like this okay or does it need to be higher?

I lost 100% of my excess weight.

I think the purpose is to minimize movement of the abdomen. Moving from sitting to standarding I guess uses less muscles than From laying down to standing up (?).
I made it through without a recliner- just was propped semi-upright in pillows.

As Peach said, getting up from many beds can be like doing sit-ups. You really need to use your bad, which you're better off avoiding until you've healed a bit. The recliner also takes some of the weight off the more sore spots while youre recovering.
A recliner is not a necessity. But it made life easier for me at first.

I never received this recommendation and had no problems sleeping in my bed; I did have to roll to my side and then sit up vs just sitting straight up for the first few days.

After almost any abdominal surgery I had (way too many to list) I found out that is was so much easier for me to sleep in a recliner than in bed. I really appreciated an electric recliner. As others mentioned, getting up from a bed was much more difficult that just getting up from a sittingp position from recliner. Plus in my recliner I was in "zero gravity pose", so my body was comfortable, and I could sleep good few hours without changing sides. One I moved to bed, moving on the bed , changing the side I was on, would wake me up due to abdominal pain.

I used a wedge pillow almost exactly like the one you show - definitely not higher. I didn't have room for a recliner and I don't like sleeping in one anyway. I used the wedge on the couch during the day and a few nights post-op, then moved it to the bed at night.

I never had any problems getting in and out of bed, up and down from a chair or anything movement wise to be honest. I also didn't take any narcotics after the day of surgery - it just really wasn't that bad!
I certainly wouldn't have bought anything special to deal with what was, at worst, a bit of discomfort.
