Topic: RE: You DON'T have to give up NSAIDs!
Actually, the DS gives a high degree of malabsorption, but it's different from the malabsorption of the RNY---it specifically targets fat absorption (DSers absorb about 19% of the fat we eat, compared with 62% for RNY patients), so SOME DSers need to supplement the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, ,and K. I haven't been taking supplements of them for about two years now, and my annual bloodwork says everything's fine. I do take a multi-vitamin every day, and 1800 mgs of calcium. But no, I don't do protein supplements---I EAT around 100-120 grams of protein daily. (*grin*) I eat less because I do get full MUCH faster than I did pre-op---pre-op, I just NEVER got full!!! But yes, if I over-eat, I do feel uncomfortable. Not so much now as in the early days, when I was learning to understand just what 'full' felt like, but there are still times when I've just gotta eat that 'last bite' and I do feel uncomfortable for a few minutes.I also drink with my meals. Yes, I can eat everything, including sugar---no dumping with the DS. But I limit how much sugar I eat, because I still absorb prretty much all the refined sugar I eat. And the DS has sort of pulled my sweet tooth---most sweets are just TOO sweet for me now, and a couple of bites satisfies me. I definitely thought the DS was better for ME than the RNY!

That sounds wonderful! So I gather you don't have the malabsorbtive problems and therefore don't need vitaminn supplementation and protein supplements? Do you eat less because you also feel full faster, or is it that you limit what you eat because you won't feel well after eating? And you can eat  everything - how about sugars? Sounds better than the RNY... Kathy

I losy 100 pounds in the first six months, and another 50 or so over the next year. I'm about to start back at the Y and try to do some firming and maybe lose a few pounds more before I start pursuing plastics. My eating patterns are...normal. If you went out to eat with me, you'd never know I had WLS. There are no foods that I like that I don't eat---I just eat a lot less of them than I did pre-op. I eat a lot of meat, cheese, eggs, and nuts, but I also eat bread, potatoes, pasta, and rice, and loads of veggies and fruits. Over all, my DS has been a WONDERFUL experience for me!

Topic: RE: knee replacement prior to age 60?
Hi Holly, I just thought I would give you my response.  I have had bilateral knee arthritis for almost 20 years, I am 43 years old.  The pain had been increasing in pain for years.  I was on multiple nsaids and pain meds.  Even last year when I had my gastric bypass it was getting to the point I couldn't put all my weight on my right knee and had to frequently use my cane.  So in August 2006 I had my gastric bypass and to date have lost 116 lbs.  However, back in January I was around 185 or so and my knees were still bothering me especially the right one.  I saw my regular orthopedic doctor and he did some new xrays and referred me to the reconstruction specialist at Florida Orthopedic Center.  I saw Dr. Kenneth Gustke in February and he basically said I could continue to live in pain or have my knee replaced there were no other options left at this point.  By the way I had had numerous injections to my knees to the point they were doing them to often.  So I had my knee replacement in April 2007 and I feel so much better. Also I wanted to let you know that Dr. Gustke isn't a hack.  He has done knee and hip replacements for years and even has patents on some knee replacements out on the market.  He travels to Europe at least twice a year to teach other Doctors how to perform the replacements.  He has told me that if I take care of my knee it could last for 20 - 25 years.  I would rather have 20 - 25 good years and worry about having a revision down the road that live for another 18 years waiting to be old enough to have the first one.   I would strongly recommend a 2nd or even a 3rd opinion.  Find someone qualified.  They are out there.  Between the Gastric Bypass and the knee replacement I feel like a new person. Good luck and Best Wishes

Topic: RE: Is Arthritis A Co-Morbidity?
Arthritis is a consideration because it can be helped by the weight loss. As far as sleep apnea, etc, you would be worked up for things as part of your pre-surgical exams.  A great site to begin your research is www.obesityhelp.com, which has all kinds of information, forums, insurance stuff, etc. Another is www.lapband.com for information specific to that. I would also suggest maybe having a preliminary consultations with one of the surgical weight loss groups in your area. Your MD may have somemsuggestions, but some of the things I had learned (through months of research!) is to find one close to where you live (if you decide on the surgery there are multiple pre-and post-op visits), has support groups at convenient times, offers nutritional counseling, has good surgical outcomes, offers financial/insurance help, and has a staff that is helpful and knowledgeable. That's some of the criteria that I can think of for now. If you decide to go for a consult I found that bringing a list of questions and concerns is helpful. Is a long tedious process, but one that's designed for our safety and the best possible outcome. It's also very confusing, especially at first, but the support groups are very helpful with this - at least you find out that everyone is just like you and feels the same as you. Good luck!

I've also wondered about this, because I feel a lot better when I'm on a NSAID. My surgical group is great, with a wonderful reputation and a low rate of complications, but they don't do the duodenal switch. Can you tell me a little about your experience? About your weight loss - how much in what time, eating patterns, etc? Thanks!

Topic: RE: Fibromyalgia
Hi Kim, I have FMS too. I had alot of health problems...I went to a Dr. in St. Louis and he said that I had mercury toxicity. I went to a dentist he referred me to, he removed all of my mercury and 95% of my symptoms disappeared. I am having hip and leg pain since the RNY, but I think it is related to the lack of protein-water-and vitamins. I am taking all of them, but some days I don't get the 60 grams in! If you want more info on the dr. just email me. Sharen in Iowa

Hi michelle! Hope you are doing good.. well the rhumetologist sqeezed me in on Monday and i finally have a defiante diagnosis of what I have: Rhumetoid Arhtris and finally was able to get some meds to take care of this. he gave me presidone 5mg  1 a day and Planequil 200 mg 2 times a day. The presidone takes a while to kick in, its still kinda hard to get out of bed and do my regular morning routine.. I am probaly going to change my hours at work... it takes me alot longer to get ready.... and he also said I have water in one knee which is why that particular one is killing me! But overall at least I got the help I needed. How is your lapband quest coming along? Irene

I'm so sorry to hear about everyone's pain and diagnosis. I've been batteling RA for 34 yrs, since I was 5 yrs. old. I was also diagnosed with Fibromyalgia 2 yrs. ago. That said, I've been through my share of meds. Since having my RNY on May 7th, I've been having a flare up, but don't let that discourage you. I wouldn't change my WLS for anything. Having 70lbs less to carry around has made a huge difference, despite the flare up. I'm in the process of adding a few meds to my current ****tail. I've been having Orencia infusions for 16 months. WLS has had no effect on this treatment. I'm also on 10 mg of Prednisone, which I'm tapering from 20mg. I'm adding Methotrexate and Lyrica for my Fibro. Finding the right ****tail is key. Don't despair. I know the pain is relentless and consuming. Be kind to yourself and start learning to ask for help. Good luck and God bless Rita
