Topic: Just found this board....
Hi everybody. Just found this board. I had been having pain in my hips the past couple of months and figured it was my body readjusting from the weight loss. Well got xrays and found out have arthritis in my hips along with my middle and lower back. Doctor prescribed celebrex ( ok'd by surgeon) . Since surgery I haven't had a lot of pain in my back but at night the hips wake me up. Has anyone tried the topical rubs ? Do any of them work ? Just wondering. Sandy

Rose You shouldn't sufffer with pain...ther are other options then N-SAIDS. I take a drug called Ultram which is a tylenol based pain killer. It is called Tramadol generically. My Rheumatologist suggests it. You also don't say what kind of Arthritis you have. If it is Rheumatoid Arthritis, there are so many new treatment options...You should go on the Arthritis Foundation's web site for information.(You can also get DR referrals there) Also, you might have to consider whether you are getting enough calcium in your diet. After RNY, you need to take Calcium Citrate, not the more commonly available Calcium Carbonate. The carbonate is impossible for RNY patients to absorb, so you need the Citrate. If you are losing bone mass due to calcium deficiency, thic may cause bone and joint pain.... No matter what, I think it is a great idea to see a Rheumatologist...Being 50 is hardly old age....YOu could live another 30 years...Who wants to be in pain that long... Good Luck, Kelly

Hi Ellen, Well I used to take a nasiad diclofenac but since surgery I can't. My Dr. thought that since I am on a antidepressant called effexor it would help the pain but it hasn't. So I am basically on nothing and just suffering through it. I am considering making a appointmant with a reumatologist to see if they have any suggestions. I wake up at night rolling over because every time I change positions it hurts. I had a massage today which was great but I can't afford one every week or more. I hate going to drs because they look at you like your crazy then I feel stupid. Rose C. p.s. I have tried musle relaxers, tylenol, spinal blocks(steroid injections).

Hi Rose, I have the same problem. My hip and legs are killing me. Every day I have pain. I really thought after losing weight that it would help, but it does seem worse. I too turned 50 in Jan. I hope it isn't just old age What are you taking for the pain? I haven't found anything that touches it yet that we can take. Ellen

Deana, Sometimes calcium deficiencies can lead to osteoporis in WLS patients, which can feel like arthritis. This usally takes time to develop, but it does happen. Its very important that RNY people use Calcium Citrate supplements because other forms of Calcium do not absorb well for us. I have autoimmune disorders, a disease called Psoriatic Arthritis and mixed connective tissue disorder. I have a family history of autoimmine dysfunction. I had these conditions, and they were much worse prior to surgery...Weighing less has made joint pain less severe and I am taking far fewer drugs... I had never heard the connection between WLS and developng these conditions..You learn something new on these boards everytime you log on.... I agree with what someone else said, if you keep having symptoms....call a Rheumatologist, they will help you get to the bottom of this probelm Kelly

Topic: RE: Anyone use Neurotin?
Nut, Your local Arthritis Foundation may be able to refer you to a good doctor or at least better doctor. Psoriatic Arthritis involves the skin, and I have had stomach problems also...Ii have found that the Rheumatologist has been the one that best manages all the problems, since they are all connected. I got my referral from the local arthritis foundation...Of course the next problem is whether they can find you one who is "in network" for your insurance. Isn't medical care just a joy... Good Luck, Kelly

I appreciate the input Kelly. I've heard of Remicade. My insurance doesn't cover it and there's the "little" fact that the doctor has to prescribe it. (sorry for the sarcarsm) The GI doc started me on Pentasa last week, two days into it I broke out into hives from head to toe, my mouth feels like one big hive, my asthma is flared and I just plain feel really sick. I've got call into him today. I stopped taking it of course. This doc is not really open to suggestions and this is the only one I've seen thats investigated this far. I read both the arthritis and Crohns sites, but bottom line is I still have to find a GOOD doctor. Thanks Nut

Topic: RE: They found Gallstone...
Arianna, I had RNY 8 months after they discovered Gallstones....they finally took my gallbladder at the same time as the RNY...You can wait as long as you have no fever or infection...Get your doctor to presribe some pain relief and stay away from fatty foods until your surgery....The doctor can give you advice about a "gallbladder diet". If you have stones, eventually, you will have to have a gallbladder surgery...I don't know if its possible in your case, but if they can do it all at once,,,,you will be lucky... What I have heard is that if you have had previous abdominally surgeries, doctors may be unable to do your band surgery laproscopically; so if you have the gallbladder surgery 1st you may have to have an open procedeure for the band...Something to think about... Only your doctor and you can make this important decision... Kelly

Topic: RE: Celebrex & Ulcers!
Ron, I take Ultram...a souped up tylenol, which seems to do the trick...I also have taken Tylenol for Arthritis, too. but the Ultram (Generic Tramdol) works well for me. My rheumatologist believes in drug vacations, so that's why I switch to over-the-counter-tylenol arthritis. Unfortunately, all the NSAIDS, like Ibuprofen, Motrin, etc...Celebrex-Cox 2 Inhibitores cause ulcers.... I do have to say that as the weight came off my joints have felt better, that is my knees, ankles, hips, and feet...But my hands still hurt... We do have quite a price to pay.... Good luck, Kelly
