Topic: RE: Dr. Called
Hope things worked out for you on your appointment on the 17th. I have had Rheumatoid arthritis for over 20 years and after I had wls it got worse, but I would not change anything. The surgery was the best thing I have done for myself in a lifetime. I had right knee surgery in 1997 and it was to remove a bone fragment from under my knee cap that had chipped off and lodged itself under. It tore up ligaments and tendons and did nerve damage. I now have a big bone spur that has come up between the joint and is painful to walk and wear pants that are tight across it. The meds to take for it is nothing. Unless your dr puts you on something like remicade or humira or one of the other meds. I take the humira and methotrexate. They do really well for a couple of weeks and then the flare ups start all over again and the pain. I hope your dr gave you good news and the problem can be dealt with or fixed.

Topic: RE: Knee Replacement Questions
I am facing the same surgery. Bone rubbing against bone in right knee, but not that bad in left knee. I know of a lady that has had it on both knees and she says she does not have any more pain or stifness at all now. She does have problems with her feet and can't stand very long cause of her job, but her knees are fine now. She can walk up inclines with no problems with her knees now she says. I am not looking forward to the surgery either, but if it will lesson the cringing and the pain I am all for it.

Topic: RE: Question: How many of you have had wls and had your arthritis improve?
My RA became worse after I had wls. But I am proud that I had wls and would not change a thing. I have flare ups every 10 days it seems. With a different part of my body affected. My surgeon told me I could never take any NSAIDS or prednisone again due to it prevents healing and breaks down skin tissue. I take methotrexate every week and humira every 2 weeks. I take tylenol arthritis everyday or so for pain and I do well with it for pain until a flare up starts and then I have to take darvocet. Your pouch will not be able to handle motrin after surgery. It has aspirin in it which causes ulcers.

Hi Everyone
I have osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and they say rheumatoid arthritis (elevated sed rate, high RF). I am in the process of trying to see a surgeon for RNY Lap. My concern is that I have to take motrin occassionally and I'm worried about my little pouch after surgery. Just curious if the surgery improved your conditions or they stayed the same or became worse.
Thanks

Topic: Knee Replacement Questions
Hello everyone,
I have severe osteoarthritis in both knees (since 1991) and I've needed both knees replaced for about 5 years now. It's bone on bone in both knees. I will be having 1 knee replacement surgery in a few months and was wondering if anyone who has had their knee(s) replaced could share their experiences with me. I'm not looking forward to surgery at all. Thanks for your help.

Topic: RE: Arthritis Meds
Hey there, my name is Renee C. from NJ and I have OA/ Fibro. I'm waiting to have a RNY in February.
Sound like you're having the typical fibro set of problems with Dr's that do not acknowledge it as being a "real" syndrome.
I was able to find a Dr. (Rhuemy specialist) that follows the protocol begun by Dr. Amand - He wrote a book "Everything you wanted to know but your Doctor did tell you about Fibromyalgia" (I think that's the title or close to it). You can get a read on line copy of it at Amazon.com. There are 3 of us suffering from fibro in the same church and 2 of us have used the protocol sucessfully. It includes taking guaifenesin daily at a dosage a Dr helps you to establish. I had great results with this for awhile and then as the pain increased I had to add celebrex, then vioxx. Now, I'm not taking anything but the guai again, becuase of the "x" scare. You also don't mention what you're eating. You might want to get to a nutritionist to learn about holistic eating (in small qty's lol) which also may help reduce your pain. I'm taking natural enzymes and Curcuminoid, which is a form of tumeric these are also helpful. Hope that helps some. Hang in there and wean yourself off that predisone.
Topic: RE: Pain in Lower back and Swelling of ankles and feet
I've had lower back surgery, and honestly I would push, save do anything to get a Cat Scan just to make sure! Not trying to freak you out, it's just better to be safe than sorry, sometimes x-rays don't show everything and can change from 1 to 3 months. i went in september for a follow-up and showed a bulging disc, and in december the disc had gone away and now they have discovered that I have spinal stenosis which is thinning of the spine. Make sure they scan from C1 to S5 that is cervical 1 to saccral 5.
I know exactly what you're talking about, oxycontin (pain med for cancer patients) doesn't even help when you're in that much pain, and it has cost me many jobs, and other opportunities.
Now I just can't wait to have the WLS. I am tired of the pain!
Good luck and best wishes
Sonia
Topic: RE: Arthritis Meds
Hi, I am pre-op for the Lap-Band and have suffered with RA for about 18 years. I presently take a low dosage of Prednisone and know you must be weened off or you can experience the feeling of set-back. Yes, it is very dangerous and you can bleed internally if you're not careful (I was in the hospital about 6 years ago for loss of blood and had to have 5 units of blood). If you're going to take medicine like Prednisone or Celebrex, make sure you eat something or drink milk to coat your stomach before taking. I also take Enbrel injections 2x/wk., Plaquenil at bedtime, Methotrexate 1x/wk., Celebrex 2x/d (I cut myself back from 3x/d to 2x/d on this about 8 mos. ago) & Folic Acid. As far as Humira or Enbrel goes I believe its what works for some, may not work for others.
I wish I had an answer for everyone taking Celebrex, Vioxx or Bextra. I need one myself.
I hope this was of help to you.
Good Luck!

Hello, I never thought I'd be here on the Arthritis Forum. (smile)
I have no idea what to expect when I go to the doc on 1/17/05. all the doc told me over the phone was the results from my x-ray and to make a appointment with a specialist. also that in the right knee I have something floating around in there. I knew something was wrong with both of my knees. and I'm not surprised either, I realize that with me carrying all that weight for years had to do some kind of damage to my knees. now I just have to deal with it and go with the flow. and pray that medication and the doc can help me with this issue
