Topic: RE: Input please....RNY or sleeve for me and my knees
Hi Briar Rose.....before my gastic bypass surgery in 12/2004, I too popped nsaids like they were M&M's. I was in constant pain.....and never felt any relief. I weighed 330 lbs and had no cartlidge in my left knee. I talked to a knee surgeon and my gastric bypass surgeon.....and decided on having the gastric bypass surgery first. I did lots of reading and realized that the lighter I was....the less pressure I would have on my knees....which then would equal less pain. One year after my surgery, I was down to 200 pounds and had my knee replacement.
The lighter you become, the less stress on your knees and then the less pain you will have. This August I had spinal fusion....and in a few weeks, I am having a minor surgery on my right knee.
You can still take Celebrex with the gastric bypass.....but as you lose the weight, you will need in less and less.
I recently discovered that I had a vitamin D deficiency which has probably caused some of my bone issues.
I too was hesitant on taking the pain narcotics that the surgeons prescribe. Knee replacement is very painful....more so than anything I had ever gone thru. For that month I was recovering....I was grateful to have the pain meds.
You owe it to yourself to be healthy and able to move about. Life is so much better when you can live it to its fullest. Please dont let fear hold you back from being the healthiest you can be.

Topic: Input please....RNY or sleeve for me and my knees
I am 54 years old. I have had arthritis (osteo) in my hands, feet, spine and knees for some years. I have also had a few borderline rhumatoid factors come up, so that may be in the mix too. Last year I contracted H1N1, and it hit my joints big time. 6 months later, I had a bad fall, and took out what was left of my left knee's soft tissue.
Osteo won't operate because I am too high risk at 280 lbs for surgery, and they want me to have wls to lose 80 lbs before they will consider total knee replacement. I am in constant pain, wearing braces on my knees, eating NSAIDS. My PCP and I think sleeving is the best for me because altho losing the wt will be great for the knees, I am still going to have pain and I want so much to be able to move and exercise again. Heck, even take a walk.....
I know that with RNY I can't take NSAIDS, and am very leary of cutting myself off of that and having to rely on narcotics or other meds.
Anyone have similiar dilemma ?

Topic: RE: Do you take Plaquenil?
I take it with no side effects. No dizziness and the eye checks for me are every 6 months to be extra cautious and no problems. Has helped me quite a bit though it may be time to move on to methotrexate I am being told by the doc.. after my WLS on June 16.
Topic: RE: Anyone have relief w/ steroid shots ??
I had a shot in my wrist in December and it was like a miracle! Started to wear off in April and I am using some Voltaren Gel again on it now but not bad enough to need another shot. I was breastfeeding just prior to the need for a shot and the way I held the baby's head created a flair in the wrists. Hoping it will not get that bad again, though it seems to have moved to an ankle. I hope you can find some relief soon!
Topic: Dr. Mario Alberto Almanza-Reyes
I was just posting this because I've had more people than I thought, write me and let me know how much their sorry and how they are praying. My momma is one of the nicest people out there, I wish that we can individually meet each and every person on this website that are planning on going to Dr. Almanza. I wish I could take you guys through a normal day in my life now that everything has messed up in my life. Going through my last summer as a high school student. I can't have fun... I won't have fun. I want justice to be served!!! I want to save someone's life. Please this is NO JOKE!! I wake up everyday and I think and pray about anybody who's in or going into surgery with Dr. Almanza... I pray for you guys. I don't even know you guys. My mom has been in ICU on a ventilator for 7 days now... my best friend... I can't go see her whenever I want to anymore... visiting hours are precise. My mom won't be able to see the 17th Anniversary of me arriving in this world, because she's too busy going through something that shouldn't have ever happened!!! DOCTORS MAKE MISTAKES... BUT WHAT KIND OF DOCTOR MAKES MISTAKES OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.. Yes, you might have had a WONDERFUL experience... but listen to the stories people.. just because you were lucky DOES NOT mean that everybody else was. There are many people around the United States and Canada that are dealing with their friends and/or family members DYING with deadly infections, holes in stomachs, esophagus, etc. You guys keep telling your friends to go.... and eventually, you are going to go through what me and my family and plenty other families are going through right now. I'm not trying to harsh Dr. Almanza's "mellow".... I am truly, honestly, and dedicative to preventing as many people from going to this doctor as possible. Please spend the extra money and getting done by someone who is, not only cheap and kind, but dedicated to helping you. Not a doctor who is just going to WHAM BAM over and never see you post-op (to many people). Please PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE..... I am not doing this to get back at Dr. Almanza or anybody that is working over there just because they've done this to my momma. I am doing this to prevent YOU from ever going through something like this. It IS NOT FUN.
Love always and forever,
Miranda

Topic: RE: who's had a total knee replacement??
Hi,
Sometimes, I feel some pain in my right knee. But I'm afraid to go to the clinic. What are the signs that I would need my knee replaced? Is it ok to ask any pharmacy technician for some pain reliever for sudden pain?

Hi LadyDi.....let me know when you schedule your surgery so that I can keep you uplifed in prayer. concentrate on how great you will feel down the road.....no more pain meds.....and the ability to keep up with your friends and family. The positives so outweigh the negatives...and the pain is short lived.

Topic: RE: Anyone have relief w/ steroid shots ??
Janice,
I started to get the Synvasic shots just after my RNY, 4 years ago. The surgeon told me that if they don't work he would give me the steroid. Because I have lymphedma, the Synvasic shot caused a reaction, so I went over to the steroids. I must admit the first year ( a shot in each knee every 3 months) I didn't feel there was that much relief, and then I noticed there was as I started taking Aleve, along with other pain relievers, but it was the shot that was helping. I now have to get the shots every 2 months to have the best relief. I also started taking Celebrex and have also started back on losing more weight. Because of my lymphedma I can only get one knee done at a time. I am also getting steroid shots in my heel for a spur that starting acting up.
Good luck, I know how painful siatica can be. I really hope the shots work for you.

Hi again IowaTeacher! I'm in Southeast Iowa, so we're practically neighbors. I'm glad the pain is at least "doable". Makes me feel a bit better. When I had my panni removal I was on Hydrocodone. That kept the pain away, can't say I had any at all. A little discomfort maybe, but no pain. Wi**** was the same with knee surgery.

Thanks RoseyK! I will admit though, the idea of it being so painful freaks me out a bit! As I've said in a previous post, I'm getting to be quite the big baby! Good luck with your second knee repair, hope all goes well!
