I've got an African Grey too and have had him since he was released from the breeder. I was on a waiting list and started visiting/bonding weekly once he was hatched. That was 5 years ago now and he's definitely bonded with me over anyone else in the family. He's better with the family when I'm not around but if I'm here he doesn't want anything to do with anyone else. 
I'm sure a lot of it is because the kids were younger and probably teased him when I wasn't around. He's definitely part of the family though. He's still adding words and sounds all the time that crack us up. No cat sounds though, I don't think he's ever even seen a cat. He call's the dogs all the time though. I find it funny when he's at their level and they start getting too close (they are Bichon Frize brothers a little over a year old). When they do, he starts telling them "Come Here" which is exactly what he doesn't want. I'm sure it must confuse the dogs totally.

Mine passed away last night as well. He was a 10 year old male who was a joy to the family. He'd mimic everyone, was very stubborn (in a good way), and could speak a few words. I loved him like he was a part of the family, ... i retract that statement. He is a part of the family. Some people just say these birds are just "pets," and I should just move on, but it's not that easy. In fact, I was closer to this bird than I ever was with any of my family members or any other person in the past decade (except my mother). It is clearly devasting, specially because I can't forgive myself since I was the one responsible for his death (I'd rather not say how he died since it will tear me up more inside since I already cant forgive myself).

Wow Sandra! That is AMAZING. I know these birds are extremely intelligent. That is what makes me love them so. I just know Chicklet will be talking soon. he is really trying hard. I sing and talk to him all the time.

I cried when I read your post. Sometimes I complain at the mess my ****ateil (Fagel) leaves. He throws seeds all over the place. He demands a taste of what ever we are eating & he too loves to whistle to the
Andy Griffith theme song. I love him like a son. He is 13 years old. My 25 year old daughter grew up with him.
I know that your Butch was a member of your family not just a pet. You have my sincerest condolences. I know how much you must miss him. I know that God must have a special place in heaven for our dear little birds.

we have 2 zebra finches that we started with in october -- they are a nice breeding pair but it would be nice if they came up for air once in a while!!! we have 5 baby zebra finches in another cage -- then we got 2 parakeets later in october -- then we jumped and bought a yellow nape amazon who is 4 yrs old -- she is wonderful!!! we got her in december for xmas -- and our last one is a 2 yr old brown throat conure who was abused and left alone -- he's just learning how to play after being here for 4 months -- besides the birds we also have 2 cats

thats sad to hear.Well birds tend to take to the person who spends more time with them.My bird doesnt like females but he loves me.I think its kind of messed up that your willing to give up ..They are like having children if the child gets out of hand will you decide u want to give it up also.?? think about it.
