I'm thinking about you this weekend! Good luck with your surgery on Monday - try to relax this weekend and don't go on any kind of food binge if you can help it! You will be able to eat again, and have tastes of what you want, and it will all be enough.
The six weeks since I had my sugery have breezed by quickly - a lot faster than the days before the surgery.
My thoughts and prayers will be for you on Monday - hope you will check in when you can!
Best to luck to you,
Terry

Topic: RE: postprandial hypoglycemia
The only reason I can stay out of work is due to disability through my employer. My eyes have gotten really bad. I work for a lrge eye department and my eyes have been being checked by an optomotrist for glasses and a retina specialist which is the specialty I work for. My eyes went from 20/30 and no glasses RX last year to left eye 20/400 and right 20/50...and corrected with new glasses I am 20/30 again...but that is a huge difference in one your. My left eye is -2.75+1.75 which is a strong RX for not having one last year. I am going to speak to the specalist in Boston about the brain fog and see if she recommends a neuro eval. I am so forgetful now. Its making me depressed. I will keep you posted!! And you please do the same!

I have read the power point, I am a nurse also and feel the same thing you do with "Brain fog" as I call it, my endo has refeared me to a neurologist in which ordered a battery of tests MRI,neuro eye exam and also will be taking a neuro-phych test in which last more then 8 hours but maybe able to determine which part of my brain has been effected by all the lows and causing my feeling out of it at all time.. I to dont feel safe around my patients or driving but at this time I have no option and simply cant quit work ,,,my dr's act like they at times dont know what to do with me as this is so new...please keep me updated with any new meds or tests that work for you!!

Here is a powerpoint that the Dr I am seeing has on the internet...very interesting. I have lows no matter what I eat. I can't go over 25 carbs without my sugar hitting over 200 and getting the side effects from high blood sugar. I get lows no matter what.. thank goodness my endo and obgyn knew I shouldn't do the glucose tolerance test. I don't even want to know what 70 grams of sugar would do to me. My current endo has no clue how to treat this. She actually had me email her the powerpoint above. She actually suggested I snack on glucose rescue tabs an hour after I eat...that should not be something I snack on to keep my blood sugar ok. I do use them often but I wouldn't make a habbit of eating three an hour after each meal...no way! I too did not know about this until I had it myself...before I had gastric bypass I did alot of research and never came across this as a possible side effect. I am very nervous in reading about it now though. Recently I just haven't felt myself. I always feel slightly impared. I told my MD that I don't feel comfortable working because I could have a diabetic emergency at any time and I would be putting my patients at risk. In reading it says hypoglycemia left ntreated can cause irreversable brain damage. I feel like I am in a cloud all the time. It very scary. I know I have had this for a long time and it went untreated. I'm glad to know there are people out there that understand, but hate that any of us are going through this...it is horrible. I was healthier at 330 lbs that I am now!!

There is HOPE... and yes many many of us on here are suffering from it.. The worst part I knew nothing about it until it happened to me and when i went crying to my Bariatric surgion he said" Stop eating sugar!" what the hell he would not even discuss this could be a sideffect from gastric bypass. I went from doctor to doctor and finally was sent to a endo who has one other bypass pt with this as a patient... I am mortified that my gastric bypass doc wouldnt even return my calls after I confronted him on this....I warn you about the glyco tolerence test if your endo recommends one do not drink the entire 8oz it contains 70 grams or more of sugar and I told him I could not possibly injest that much I would be very ill . After only drinking half I ran to the restroom very ill and my sugars dropped to 27.... the whole time the lab techs kept telling me to keep drinking.... Also make sure you have a snack after test they tryed to give me a coke to drink...lol I ate a handful of fresh cherries and plunged to 30 within 10 mins ...got to love reactive hypoglycemia!!

I would love to be functioning at this point...the ups and downs really wear on the system. My surgeon was appauled when he found out the endo Dr had me on insulin and immediatly switched me to metformin which I am not seeing any results yet. I see a specialist at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston next Friday. She has done alot of research on this as well and I hope she has some answers for me. I can't live like this. Forget not drinking and driving...I can't eat and drive. I have basically stopped driving and if I have appointments or things to do I fast. I'm fine as long as I dont put food in my mouth. I dont even realize my sugars are low until it is the in the 40's or lower. Lowest one I've recorded was 29. I barley made it to ge tsomething. Its very scary! I'm happy to hear there is hope. I'm definatley not alone with this issue...thats for sure. Thank you for your reply.

I am going on my 2nd year of having reactive hypoglycemia. I can only say that I am functioning at this point.. Insulin is not the answer at all most of us take precose or byetta/victozia, these medication slow down the gut activity and thus stop the dumping... I wish that I could give you easy solutions but everyone is different. no carb diets are really not the answer either as complex carbs keep our sugars stable. I know that there is a Dr in clevland a Dr.Shalahi that has been doing research for years on this condition and if you look at my previous posts I beleive her name and number is in there and you can call and they are more then willing to help your endo get you on the right track.... best of luck to you

Topic: RE: DIABETICS ON OPTIFAST....
Hi I am having my op 27th oct. I am on optifast and diabetic. My doctor sd no need to adjust metformin as it will not cause my sugar to drop out of control. I think for insulin it is more serious. I think it best to go on optifast as it is complete. Make sure you have half package at bed time so that your sugar does not go out of control in the morning. My diatician told me timing meals is the best thing we can do for sugar balance and also make sure our first meal is within 1 hr of waking up.
