I'm type 1 and was on the pump pre and post op. I decreased my basal rate considerably, and also had set patterns set up on my pump so that I could go to that. I eventually went from running about 70 units of basal down to 25 while in the hospital. Crazy - everyone is different. Have a notebook with percentages already written down so you have it set say 20, 40 or 60 less. I didn't have an endo at the time - internal med doctor, and we had already set up this before hand. But mostly I dealt with my sugars the entire time. Having that notebook was great, because sometimes i was just to sleepy to care about much of anything.

Sorry this is late getting to you, hope it all worked out ok.

You say you're staying away from "sugars," but how is your intake of CARBS (bread, rice, pasta, fruit, potatoes and other starchy veggies, etc.)? It's not just sugar that affects blood glucose levels, but ALL dietary carbohydrates, even those touted as supposedly "healthy" such as whole grains, fruits, and veggies. Whether it's diabetes or reactive hypoglycemia, it usually helps to limit your total carb intake and eat a little bit every few hours instead of eating only a few times a day.

Topic: diabetes and dumping syndrom
i am 3 years out and since surgery i have been very good about staying away from sugars...i eat a very good, consistant diet.  lately i have been having very serious spikes and dumps in my blood sugar.  to the point of passing out at work,,i have felt my sugars drop and know if i eat a peice of fruit it would level out and it would be back to business as usual.  i did not think i needed to use a glucose meter.  lately iam crashing and can not recover from it for hours.  now i am checking my blood with a meter and i having a sharp spike and then it drops.  ER doc says its probably diabetes but because he is not exactly sure how dumping syndrom could tie in, he could not say for sure.. so i am reaching out to the members of O,, Thanks for your help...

Topic: HELP! Endocrinologist has abandoned me!
I am scheduled for surgery tomorrow and having second thoughts. I am a Type I Diabetic and on a pump. Last week, I sent my endo an email asking for post-operative guidelines for my blood sugars. Essentially she has left it up to the surgeon to handle everything. SERIOUSLY? So now I am on my own on this. Not giving me such a comforting feeling. I am going to ask my surgeon if its possible to order an endo consult after my surgery while in the hospital. I have been diabetic for over 30 years and have never had surgery, this is scaring the daylights out of me!

Has anyone Type I or II had to deal with a situation like this? If so how did you handle it?

Topic: RE: When will my blood sugars be normal
Hello, when i started this process a almost a year ago i was at a 12.9 and when it came down to crunch time my dr told me i was too much of a risk i needed to get my a1c down to at least a 9.0 so that became my mission it was a lil higher then he wanted but  i was able to get it down and that was what mattered i think all dr.'s have a diff aspect on it some dont care and my dr.' cared very much it was my life in his hands.. I took 2000 mg of metformin and actos and victoza and my pump and u-500 a day . i was starting to give up. I am glad i didnt buecause i am off all of the meds and slowly weening myself off my 15 units @ bedtime too...  I looked at this surgery as i need help with my diabetes and i get to loose wight as a bonus.. This surgery was the best thing i did. I know you can do it keep up the work ...Good Luck !!!!!

 Keep the faith gwenboldrick.

I have been on Optifast now for four days.  I have stopped all my insulin injections, and my numbers have planed off to normal. I of course couldn't be happier, but  feel rough.  I was told that my numbers could climb for a few days, but, would start coming back down to normal.  While everycase is different, if your numbers continue to climb, contact your nurse, or doctor that is following you and get the right advice.  Best of luck

Hi Karla!  Diabetes is my main reason for wanting the surgery also.  What was your A1c going in to sugery?  I take 500mg metformin twice a day, victoza in the morning, and 40-50 units of Levimir at night, plus Apidra during the day.  I went from an A1c of 13 last Sept, to 8.5 in March.  I am not a good diabetic patient, so my numbers are probably back up.  Boo!   I was just reading a post where most Dr.s won't do the surgery until your A1c is down.  Boo again!
