Topic: RE: When will my blood sugars be normal
My blood sugars went down gradually. I stayed on metformin for a few months after surgery, but didn't take the glimepuride, actos or insulin. After about two months my blood sugar seemed to stabilize and I don't take any medications now. My latest A1C was 5.5, so be patient, it will probably happen for you pretty soon.

Your surgeon doesn't seem to know much about diabetes and how metformin works, then. If you take a metformin just because you have a reading above 160, it WILL NOT HELP. Metformin works in such a way that you have to take it for a few WEEKS before you see the results because it has to sort of build up in your system. It will have no effect if you just take it occasionally "as needed." If I were you, I would seek advice about your diabetes meds from your PCP or endocrinologist (whoever you've worked with previously regarding your diabetes meds), not a surgeon. Surgeons specialize in SURGERY, not diabetes.

Topic: RE: Victoza
Have been on Victoza about 2 weeks, the first week at half dose, and a week at the full dose.

I tried taking the shot before bed, but woke up sick to my stomach, head fuzzy until noon.  I have switched to taking the shot in the morning after breakfast, and it seems to be okay.

I have bad acid reflux, depending on what I eat, and the occasional nauseaus feeling.  I seem to have a thick taste in my  mouth at times as well.  Chewing gum helps. Coffee, orange juice and cheese are off my menu because of this.

With 1000mg  metformin in the AM and the same in the evening, my bloodsugar seems to be stable.

I have lost about 10 pounds.

I don't seem to be as hungry during the day, and at supper I can only eat about half my dinner before I feel stuffed.

If your daughter can stand injecting herself, and is prepared for a rough patch until the side effects subside, it is something to think about.

It is not covered under any government (OHIP at least is not covering it) drug plan such as the trillium program, and my druggest says it runs about $156 for three pens.  When on the full dose each pen is about 12 shots.

I haven't been to see my PCP. But my surgeons orders are for me to take a metformin if my blood sugar is over 160. I was on glyburide, insulin and the metformin before surgery. About half the time I check its barely over 160, but I would love to be off diabetes meds altogether.

Topic: How did I gain 10 pounds in the hospital having my surgery???
Before I left my house on Monday morning, my scale said 210 and my blood sugar meter said 84.
When I got to the hospital, their scale said 211 and their meter said 75. They put me on an IV with (I assume glucose) sugar so I wouldn't go too low.

I had my surgery around 11:30.

For the next day or so it seemed that they'd come check my sugars then come back with a shot of insulin. I finally asked about that and was told there was sugar in the IV. I asked if it made sense to push sugar into my system then come and give me insulin. That was the last time that happened.

During my 4 days in the hospital I had maybe a total of 10-12 ounces of glucerna, 6 ounces of cranberry juice, 4 ounces for broth and some water.

I came home on Thursday, got on my scale and weighed 220.

How can this happen???????

Topic: RE: A1C
You can do it!  Three months ago mine was at 11.2 and as of yesterday it's now down to 8.5.  In May, after completing all my pre-op my surgeon sprung it on me that she wouldn't do surgery until I had it under control around an 8.  Needless to say the next day I was in my PCP's office asking for any help he could offer.  He put me on sliding scale injections, two types of insulin, that would help me get it down and in that two months time I thought some of my fingers would fall off from checking my blood so often.  But, by making me learn what I was putting into my body he also helped me understand that yes, I can control  my sugar numbers and part of my downfall was my own stupidity for not listening.  I tried Byetta last year and it never did anything for me.  I saw no actual fluctuation in my numbers and they certainly didn't go down.  It's hard work on our end, but oh so worth it.  Today my surgeon cleared me for surgery and even told me she already had approval from BCBS to go ahead and set my date.  Can't wait to hear back from her this week and get this started!

Hang in there, Like I said above...YOU CAN DO IT!

Be patient - it's not always immediate. Plus, stress on the body can make glucose levels wonky, and you're still healing from surgery, which is MAJOR physical stress.

Are you off your meds right now? I was tapered off of my metformin gradually for my first 6 months post-op.

Congrats!! It will hopefully only get even better as you lose more weight. I'm just over 2 years out, and my A1C as of June 9 was 4.6 - lowest ever!
