Topic: RE: If you are Type 2 and considering WLS...
I'm over 2 years out, and my latest lab results are in:

A1C: 4.6
Fasting glucose: 70
Fasting insulin: 2

WLS has saved me from type 2 diabetes (at least for now!).

When I began my WLS journey , A1C was around 13..... my endocrinologist upped the insulin for a brief period to keep the daily readings around 150.... I think it was arounf 90 units per day.  Wasn't fun, but I was ready for surgery.

Post op, the diabetes did not correct itself.  I was still on oral meds and after time, was put back on insulin and another injection called viktoza.   My MDs just kept giving me more meds.

My diabetes was always out of control and always had 'head hunger'.  Thanks to a chance appt with a chiropractor/health coach, I learned of how the coffe/decaf and artificial sweetners can render some folks insulin resistant.   I simply stopped all coffe and decaf and ALLL ARTIFICIAL SWEETNERS. for a week.  then two, then three ....     Once I stopped the decaf and splenda, my blood sugars began to come down;  my medications were reduced and after 6 weeks, the insulin was put away.  Iwas off all medications.

Good luck!

Topic: When will my blood sugars be normal
I thought one of the points of RNY surgery was to get off my meds for diabetes. My fasting blood sugars is from 140s to 190s. I have to admit its much better than before surgery, I just want it to go away.

Noel,

I  don't have much to suggest but I didn't want you to go unanswered.  You might want to talk to your Dr. about Byetta.  It is an injected medication but is not insulin.  I am on it and it helped me to loose some weight and my blood sugar is in control.  I don't know if it can be used with insulin but I bet you could find out with a little internet research.

Good luck and I hope you are able to acheive the A1C necessary to have your surgery.

I told them to keep my pump on me while in surgery,, even had my basal rate lowered to about 40% of my normal prior to surgery and came through it fine. Some drs say NO insulin prior to surgery, but they don't seem to consider we need a basal, either with the pump or injection. I had my rates written down in a notebook and took it with me. Then when a doctor needed to be updated, they can glance at the notebook. When I did all across the board changes, it was written in that notebook. Sometimes I was on the good stuff, and hard to get it all straight. So having written down helped. They wanted me off the pump but there was no way. Friend of mine had sugary and they removed hers during and woke up in a couple hours 700-800 bg later. (non-wls surgery)wasn't going to let them do that to me.

Hi Beth,

I totally understand. It took me a year and I finally got approval. Like you I am a diabetic that is looking forward to being in remission or all together gone. Either way the weight loss will be a plus.

Hello,

I'm a type II diabetic and on an insulin pump. My basal insulin has just been increased again  and my A1C is 9.5. While I know surgery isn't not a "cure" I do hope that it helps. My doctor suggested it a year ago and I just got my final approval this week. My surgery date is Aug 17.2011 I to am very nervous. I praying for a better quality of life...the weight lost will be an added bonus.

WOW! That is wonderfull Cytomomma! I too have been able to lower my Lantus from 140 to 40 since surgery . I still take Humalog when I am eating 20 carbs or more. Today I had the worst low I have ever had ! 56 I did not realize how little I ate, I was being very careful because there were foods I have not had yet. Anyway I was satisfied with my meal but over-shot my insulin. I am balanced again but and wiser. Congrats again on your A1C. Keep up the great work! Kahwren
