Topic: RE: How many people have had their diabetes go away after WLS?
I took my last meds for type II diabetes on May 4 09 (the day before my RNY) and have not had to take them since. My last A1C was 5.5 and my BS never gets over 120.. So I would have to say that it has worked for me.

I think it is realistic to be hopeful about getting off the meds at some point. Good Luck to you!

If you're not comfortable with this doc, then switch. Also, you do not need an endo to recommend you for WLS - it can be your general PCP. I've never been to an endo since my diabetes diagnosis (I did see one as a teen when I had glucose spilling into my urine, but I wasn't diagnosed with my type 2 until I was 25). If the next doc is not supportive of your chosen course of treatment (WLS), then keep switching until you find one who is (unless they have a REALLY good reason that you should listen to other than judgemental opinions).

My highest A1C ever was 11.4.  I managed to get it down to 7.2 pre op.  At that time I was taking 2 different types of insulin, 2000 mg of metformin, byetta shot, and another pill whose name I can't think of at the moment.  I haven't had ANY medication for diabetes since surgery 7/14/09.  My A1C as of last week was 5.2I was on 15 different medications for assorted ailments.  Now I take just two - a blood pressure pill (1/2 the dose I used to take) and a thyriod pill (again half the dose I used to take).  I feel great!  Still have 50 lbs to lose and the going is slow.  Entirely my fault!  Working full time, going to college full time, and tutoring - just not making time for exercise.
I would not say my diabetes went away.  I think once a diabetic always a diabetic.

Topic: changing doctors before beginning process

Does anyone think it's a bad idea to change diabetes doctors before the surgery process begins?    I have an appt for next Wed for a consultation with a surgeon after going to a few seminars.  I was supposed to have an appt w/my endo on tues afternoon (the endo who is the one who finally convinced me to look into the surgery in the first place.)    They cancelled my appointment (2nd cancellation, the first appt was supposed to be today but she wouldn't be in the office, so they rescheduled for tues afternoon.    Reason they are giving for cancelling was that they did not receive my bloodwork and would not see me without it (keep in mind, that I've had diabetic and thyroid bloodwork done twice in the past 2 months to begin with!)  Yes, I forgot to get it done, but I've been spending to much time researching WLS and then my mom had gallbladder surgery and couldn'****ch my daughter, which meant time to get bloodwork was non-existent, that I ran out of time by the time I remembered.

Why am I so upset with their office, when it's my fault I forgot...two reasons.  The first was their tone in which they cancelled (no questions about did I have it done and perhaps the lab didn't send it over or was there a problem.)  And the 2nd is that I've never heard of cancelling an appt for lack of bloodwork.   This doctor is very aggressive,  and I like her, however, I don't like the way the office staff treats me and I really can't stay w/a doctor who cancels first and doesn't even both to ask questions (especially on a holiday weekend...they called me at home and i didn't get the message until 7pm at night when they were already gone for the long weekend!  UGH!

The reason I'm nervous to drop this doctor though is I'm afraid that if I switch it oculd harm my chances of a "new' doctor recommending me for surgery...but i hate the idea of staying w/her until it's over...in the earliest April or May :(     How important is it to have the same doctor for years in order to have the surgery approved by insurance?    Does anybody think switching would be a bad idea?   My stress level is out the roof right now and I am so ready to scream.

I apologize for rambling, but I'm just so angry right now!

Thanks in advance :)

tell me please, why you do not such alternative methods as physiotherapy? it's the sphere, where are lots of scientific researches and innovations. for example, I pay my attention on magnetotherapy, because it's perspective, up-and-coming and too interesting for people who suffer from diabetes. I can share with you the information, have a look and give me please your opinion about it

Topic: RE: Type 1 Diabetic going to have RNY
I had my RNY Dec 10' I' type 1 and on a pump.  I have lost 43 pounds my goal was 80.  But the good news is my A1C was 7 at my last labs. Also my blood pressure is right on.  Did experience several lows but kept tweaking my basil and it does appear to be correct for now.  The insulin does slow the weight loss down but everything else is great.

Hi - new here on this board and just had my surgery August 16th.  I was barely controlling my diabetes - a1c levels between 7 and 8 on 4 glucovance (5/500 metformin and glyburide) per day and morning dose of humalog 75/25 of 65 units and an evening dose of 58 units.  After the surgery... only a few days later...  I had zero meds going in and blood sugars running in the mid to high 200's.  I decided to add the glucovance back - only 2 tablets per day, and ALREADY I am running 140's during the day.  I am still tweaking it with PCP and such, but you are reading a post from someone who had consistent levels in the 500's with the glucovance 2/2x and no insulin only a year-and-a-half ago.

I just had the surgery two weeks ago, and my blood sugars have calmed down that much.  I know I have saved my life with this!  Anyway, I am sure that it will continue to improve, and I will be able to get rid of all meds.  YAY!
I believe you are being very realistic. Best of luck to you on your journey!

Yes you are still considered a diabetic and will be for life.  Just like someone who gets good control of their diabetes through diet is still considered diabetic.  If they cover diabetic supplies then you should be able to get them.  Sorry you have been hypoglycemic.  Even if you weren't considered diabetic before I would hope they would cover it due to the hypoglycemia.  Its good to keep tabs on these numbers, severely low Blood glucose can cause seizues and has been known to happen with some post RNY patients who have reactive hypoglycemia.

I am 3 months out and off all diabetic meds and having normal blood sugars.  With that said, once you are diabetic you are always diabetic.  You may already be aware of this.  Its especially important to keep in mind in times of illness, stress, and while taking particular medications that can affect your blood sugar.  It's great not to have to take the medication now and even better that I am not doing the damage to my body.
